I helped instruct Beyond Conceaked Carry Advanced with Ben and Bob Nov. 21-22 in San Antonio and got the opportunity to be a student on the second day of class.
The defensive concepts I learned as a student were truly eye-opening. With simple but proven techniques I gained the confidence I will need if I am ever involved in a contact to 3 foot distance fight.
Shooting from a retention position, using skeletal structure to block and create space with the “weak” arm, one-handed weapons manipulation and low light technique really made this course stand out in my mind as one of the most useful self defense classes I have ever been privileged to attend.
I took Beyond Concealed Carry- Advanced.. class of November 2015 San Antonio, Texas. Thank you to Ben Branam, Bob Mayne, Chaz Murray and Tracy Becker Thronburg. You put on a great class on armed self-defense. I wish every concealed carrier took a class like this, and wish I took the class before I started to carry. The night shoot was awesome too.
Beyond Concealed Carry ENHANCED September 19-20th in Dover Ohio
Very impressed with the training received. Well worth the money spent. I came out a better shooter, and a better thinker about self defense situations.
Both Ben and Bob are respectful teachers and worked to improve different shooters with areas that they needed help on. No cookie cutter approach here.
I would take this class again in a heartbeat and plan to attend anything offered by these guys.
Beyond Concealed Carry ENHANCED August 8-9, 2015 in Sequim, WA
This is a great class as it starts out with safety, fundamentals, moves into forward and rearward fire drills. Then lateral, malfunction drills, multiple targets, hostage rescue, long distance, shooting from cover, moving safely through a crowd, and not to forget the mindset lectures.
Guest appearance by Glenn Tate and members from his team.
This was a great group of students who all got along and had a good time.
The weather was great, what a great relief from the heat from the South.
I highly recommend training with Bob and Ben. They do a great job!
Beyond Concealed Carry ENHANCED August 8-9, 2015 in Sequim, WA
Wow, what an inspiration this class has been. I have no idea why I have been so content to practice at a range with rules against holsters, rapid fire, and movement. Except purely for shooting groups, this sort of practice may actually ingrain BAD habits.
Here are just a few of my take-aways from Bob's training: Move, then draw, then engage. More rounds on board is far superior to fewer rounds. A shooting grip with as much of the gun's grip controlled by my paws is the best. Drawing with the quickest path to muzzle-forward is more effective if life is at stake.
This is a class one could take every single year! I hope to continue learning from Bob in the future. Until then I plan to practice the skills he has taught me so they remain as automatic motions if ever I or a loved one are threatened with death or grave bodily harm.
Beyond Concealed Carry, DFW November 3, 2012 and March 2, 2013
Pistol Fighting Dynamics, DFW August 24, 2013 and November 8, 2014
Why did I take both classes twice? Because they are worth taking again. Bob and Ben first and foremost run a very safe class. They focus on practical skills and not extraneous material. And their classes provide enough repetition on the skill drills to learn the techniques they are teaching.
The truth is, many of us city dwellers have access to public ranges. Most of them don't allow holster draw. Practically none of them offer the opportunity to point shoot, shoot on the move, or address multiple targets. Getting out to a range with Bob and Ben gives me the opportunity to learn new skills, practice things I rarely get to practice, and borrow ideas from their expertise.
Their classes are a great investment for anyone who wants to learn to effectively defend themselves with a firearm. I'm going to find a way to make it to one of their night shooting classes next!
Pistol Dynamics - Night Fighting - San Antonio - December 6, 2014
Great Training. Started with a review of the use of the flashlight, movement and gun in the daylight hours and then progressed to practicing at dusk and when it got dark.Practiced a variety of lighting techniques to see what worked with my flashlight and what didn't. Real test was when it was dark and I realized that I needed some light splash to really see my sights, too much and it washed out the target.
Moon was out so only in a few spots on the range were you in total darkness but it was surprising just how much you could "see" with just a little light.
When it was full dark, pulled out various lights, truck lights, flashing lights etc and got to see the impact on vision with the different types and levels of light.
Ben's course was a good test as the first time through you did not know what you were looking for or where the targets were. Even repeat runs were varied as there were different targets called out that made the run different each time.
Enjoyed it and learned more about night fighting. Definetly something that should practiced as much as possible as the night does change your outlook.
Couldn’t agree more with Chris’s comments above. The course really helped me fine tune my selection of everyday carry flashlight. Also made me appreciate the Trijicon night sites on my Glock 22. Maybe not so important for total darkness scenarios, but indispensable in low light situations. Often did not need additional illumination in low light situations with the night sights. I will definitely be adding them to my other carry/ home defense handguns. As usual at Ben and Bob’s courses, there were lots of cool toys to try out after the course was completed. Had a great time, and already have several friends asking about the next low light course.
Pistol Fighting Dynamics, DFW November 8, 2014
Great training, and it is at first challenging, because most of us have been trained to stay on our front sight. But Ben Branam made the techniques possible through patient, step-by-step skills and trust building throughout the day. NEVER would I have thought that I'd be making consistent hits on steel targets with unsighted shots from hip and chest levels out to 10 yds.!
Once I was finally dialed in (because Ben kept "gently" kept reminding me - "Barry, stop looking at your gun" LOL!), point shooting became doable and repeatable. In fact, on one string at 10 yds, I rapidly emptied my magazine of the last 7 rounds - clang, clang, clang, clang......and Ben paid me what I considered a high compliment when he said from the end of the line, "Quit showing off down there".
This quality training from a great instructor that maintains a safe, yet enjoyable time at the range, is worth at least $100 more than what is charged for the current training. This is my second training class with Ben (last one was with Bob Mayne and Ben) and I will be taking more training from them in the future. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to push their skills past what you can accomplish on a square range.
Pistol Fighting Dynamics, DFW November 9, 2014:
Very challenging class while at the same time a confidence building class. Many of the techniques taught were actually harder than they looked, but Ben has a way, and the patience, to work with a person to get it right. I can't tell you how many times in one day the thought came to me, "Hey I can do that now"!
Ben's quick wit and sense of humor added to quality of the lessons and made it fun too. We even learned not to make any furtive movements. (You're going to have to take the class to get that one!)
I'm ready to sign up for the next time!
Beyond Concealed Carry - Seattle 2014
It was great to spend a day with Bob and Ben. The range, setting, and weather were wonderful. This class presents a good introduction for developing the necessary skills to draw from concealment, shooting at close range, moving and shooting, and lots and lots of safety! I have been a concealed carry permit holder since 1972 and learned more in this one day than in the past 35 plus years!
Definitly worth the cost. Over the years I have learned a lot from listening to Bob and Ben on their podcasts. In one day I learned exponentially more! Would I recommend this to a friend? Most definitly! I would encourage family and friends to take a class from these guys any day.
August 2014 Beyond Concealed Carry Class - Sequim, WA
Worth the price of admission. I recommend anyone interested in training do so with these guys. As a previous posted noted, bring more ammo. They keep you moving so you'll have a lot of opportunity to use up lots of rounds.
I just can’t say enough of what I
got out of BCC with Ben & Bob. Both can shoot but I saw Ben pick up
a students gun who thought the sights were off and Ben put 3 on target –
2 in the same hole and the third was touching. Amazing. I got so much
more than my money’s worth. I’m still pumped up about practicing what
they taught us. I went from hitting the target about 30% at somewhat
close range because I’m a trigger wanker to hitting targets 80% at 30
yards because of the instruction we all got and the one-on-one help I
got from Ben. Fort Discovery is a sweet, little compound in the woods
perfect for training. Glen Tate and Pow of the 299 Days series were
there shooting with us and helping us out. I was worn out by how much
we did – a bit sore and stiff the next day but hey – they made me a
better shooter and they made it damn fun as well. One of the best
weekends I’ve had.
Don’t pass up a chance to train with both or either one. I promise you will not regret it and you’ll enjoy every minute of it.
Wow, what an amazing weekend!!! I was lucky enough to attend the class put on by Bob and Ben, but it was also at Fort Discovery as well. Oh did I mention that Glen Tate and the infamous gunfighter Pow was there too??? Ive been shooting competition for a while now and thought I already knew how to shoot on the move and know how to shoot behind a barricade etc, so this will be fun to finally meet Bob, Ben, Glen and Pow and make some new friends along the way. Well let's just say that there are some aspects to competition shooting that will keep you from winning the fight and I will leave it at that. In this class you are taught how to effectively fight with a handgun. These guys are great teachers and a class acts. Ben and Bob make a great team because they bring different things to the table for example Ben is a combat vet who uses his experience and applies it to the civilian world and ingrains in your head what you need to be thinking to win the fight, Bob is a class act and has a style teaching that is methodical as he will "tell, show and do" each drill. Did I mention that Glen and Pow were there too??? Pow has skills, Pow will take you aside and calmly work with you if he sees something that is lacking in your skill set and gives out awesome high fives and fist bumps. Glen is one of the nicest and humble guys in the world that had some real world props that he used to drive home some points on top of some legal expertise that I'm sure you will hear on an upcoming podcast. I saw some remarkable progress from all of the students. The beginning of the class works on basics and gives you a solid platform to build your skills on and I saw the students including myself just grow from there. The venue was awesome as Fort Discovery is in one of the most beautiful parts of Washington ran by some real professionals whose hospitality is off the charts and I am having a hard time putting how awesome the venue is into words. If you ever have a chance to learn how to fight with a pistol from Bob and Ben I strongly suggest it!!!
August 2014 Beyond Concealed Carry class in Seattle (Sequim, Wa.)-
WOW. Fantastic training. No B.S. LOTS of shooting (bring way more than the minimum number of rounds). Bob and Ben put 110% into this. Also thanks to guests Glen and Pow for their contributions. TAKE THIS CLASS; you'll be glad you did.
I attended the Aug 9th, 2014 Beyond Concealed Carry class in Sequim, WA. There was a vast mix of attendees with varied skill levels. Ben and Bob were there, with a guest appearance from both Glen Tate and Pow; a member of "the team" from the 299 Days book series. All of them are awesome shooters and my hat goes out to 'Pow' who is as good if not better a shooter than the books portray.
The class starts with the basics of ensuring safety, along with firing quickly on targets from close range. There is a heavy emphasis mindset and the need to keep fighting in order to survive. Ben's years of experience in the military are evident in not only his skill, but his ability to speak from the "been there, done that" perspective. In addition, this information was backed up from Pow's personal perspective of keeping things practical manageable to your skill level.
The class progressed quickly to incorporating movement and proper footwork into the mix of shooting, along with 360 assessments and shooting from cover and barricades. Overall the class experience was excellent and I would highly recommend this, or any of Bob and Ben's courses. You won't regret the investment in proper training.
I attended the June 7/8 Beyond Concealed Carry-Enhanced class in Centerton, Arkansas. The course contained a good mixture of covering & reinforcing the basics (grip, stance, sight alignment and trigger control) while getting into more advance concepts (shooting on the move, shooting around barricades and vehicle fighting). I think Bob, Ben Jon and Chaz hit a sweet spot in not overwhelming less experienced shooters while challenging those with a little more experience.
Bob, Ben, Jon and Chaz were great instructors and were always helping each student improve their skill. I would highly recommend attending this class if offered in your area. You can even use a revolver to shoot the course. You just to practice your reloads more often.
Thanks again Bob, Ben, Jon and Chaz.
I attended the Beyond Concealed Carry class in Centerton Arkansas on June 7-8,2014. Another great class taught by Bob, Ben and Jon Hodaway at the Nighthawk Training facility. Chaz also supported the class with his talents. This is a great class to take which includes gun safety, marksmanship, gun fighting tactics and most importantly MINDSET. With out the proper mindset you are lost. The instructors have gathered experience from a wide range and gave the knowledge to the students and genuinely care about the success of everyone in the class. I felt the safety of everyone there was always in check, and I know that everyone improved their skills. You definitely get your money's worth in this class.
The Pistol Fighting Dynamics class is an excellent opportunity to learn and practice point shooting and handling and shooting a pistol while moving. I have taken this course twice and learned something new both times. Can't wait for Bob and Ben to come back to the Dallas area for another class.
Myself, a friend and father-in-law attended the June 7th and 8th Beyond Concealed Carry. This class was held at the Nighthawk Training Academy in Centerton, AK. For all of us this was the first class like this we have attended. We had no idea what to expect. After a couple hours we were all very comfortable with what was going on. Having Ben who was a Marine and has real world experience as to what the bad guy is thinking was very beneficial. Out of a class of 14 only 2 of us were shooting a 1911 platform. Most others were either shooting glock or a M&P pistol I believe, and 1 wheel gunner. With the amount of rounds and training we got it made me more confident in carrying and shooting my 1911. Experience of the shooters ranged from basically beginner to advanced. The instructors were able to help out and improve all levels of skill. Never once was somebody talked down to if they did something wrong. If necessary somebody was pulled aside and the issue was talked thru with them.
This class made me realize that if and when I am going to carry having this training at least 1x per year will greatly benefit your skills for carrying a gun.
Thanks again to Bob, Jon, Ben and Chazz.
I attended Beyond Concealed Carry - Enhanced at Nighthawk Custom Training Academy. To be honest, the main reason I attended was so I could meet Bob and Ben. However, after listening to Bob provide the details of the course on the Roadgunner podcast, I got even more excited. The course was everything I wanted plus more!!!
Bob, Ben, Chazz and even Jon did an awesome job instructing and making sure the course was safe.
Now, I hope they can come back and teach Beyond Concealed Carry - Advanced.
