This is the first official mid-week episode by Ben Branam of Modern Self Protection (MSP.) I decided to start a mid-week, short podcast with Ben doing most of the talking on various subjects related to guns and preparedness. So if you want to learn to shoot your rifle accurately, you’ll enjoy this brief episode. Thanks for downloading and listening.

    Hey Ben,

I was wondering if you shoot with 2 eyes or 1 when using iron sights? I have been using a pistol caliber carbine in local steel shooting competitions. When I started I didn’t have a RDS and I eventually got one. I noticed an improvement it time because I was now using both eyes which allowed my to see my next target that much quicker.

So for me at close range the RDS really helped my transitions. Just wondering your thoughts.

    Good podcast!

    Hey Bob & Ben,

Thanks for the new mid-week episodes guys! Great info, Ben, on rifle stance. That makes alot of sense and I’m going to practice that stance with my AR.

Thomas, I shoot with both eyes open and it really helps using Ben’s technique. He should comment soon also.

    Thomas,

I shoot everything both eyes open, but that takes a lot of work. With a dot site you should definitely shooting both eyes open. Shooting in steel matches this technique will keep up with your dot site. I like to put my dot site up above the irons because I’ve trained myself on this technique. I would try this and see if it improves or slows you down.

    Ben,

My dot is above my irons as well, so maybe I was already doing this.

On the subject of shooting with both eyes open with iron sights. I would be very interested in how you guys trained for this or any tips you have for getting started.

The way I trained is by making a commitment to shoot with both eyes open, and going to numerous IDPA matches and Carbine matches to practice. It works great for me, including taking training classes.

For people trying to learn it’s all about training your brain. I suggest 15 minutes a day or a couple times a week, not one long training session, but multiple little ones. Start by mounting the rifle, or holding the handgun up with open sites. Have one eye closed like you normally do. Now open that closed eye, just a little and focus on the front site. Keep the off eye closed just a little and look at the sites, your target, and back again. You’ll be surprised how tired you get really fast. After a little while, or the next day, open the eye a little further. If you work on this for a week or two (depending on how much you’ve trained yourself to have only one eye open) it should start coming really easy. You already shoot a dot with both eyes open, I think it won’t take you long of dedicated practice to learn.

Just a side note, when I make a really small precision shot with my handgun I find myself closing my off eye sometimes, so it may never entirely go away, but you’ll be able to shoot with both eyes open.
