Can you fight with your handgun? What I mean by that, is can you fight your way out of trouble if you’re attacked? I’m not advocating looking for a gunfight, please don’t assume that. What I am advocating is the training needed to fight your way out of trouble and stay alive. That’s really why we carry a gun, isn’t it? So this episode is interview number 2 with Jon Payne, staff instructor at Suarez International. We discuss the upcoming Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas on May 28th and 29th. in this interview, you’ll gain valuable insight to the “self defense” mindset and tactics even if you don’t attend this course. We will definine in more detail, getting off the X, dynamic movement, defending SUL, defensive tactics and a lot more. Please remember to join the GRRN forum or post a comment on this website if you have comments or questions. Also, version 2 of my “Shooter’s Club” premium podcast will be released in about a week (slightly late.) Click the “Shooter’s Club” link at the top of this website. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne – HandgunWorld Show

2 fellow shooters joined me at the shooting range recently and we talked afterwards. One is from Serbia and the other is from Southern California. Both now live in the gun friendly state of Texas. You will hear their perspective of what happened at the Real World Gun match at Dallas pistol club and how it has helped them improve their shooting skills and self defense gun handling techniques. I also cover some more listener feedback. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for a new shooter to get started I think you will enjoy this show. They shot their carry guns and give listeners a unique perspective on what that’s like too. Please remember to join me at the GRRN forum and my YouTube Channel.  Also, I am donating 1/2 of the proceeds from my “Shooter’s Club” CD/Digital download to the Second Amendment Foundation, now through March 15th. This isn’t really a full episode so that’s why it’s called Episode 106b. But today I had the opportunity to shoot the new Kimber Solo Carry 9mm pocket pistol. I rate this gun a 7. You’ll hear my thoughts on why I didn’t give it a 9 or 10. In my opinion it has some strange features that I believe are weaknesses but also has some very nice features, especially the trigger. Episode 107 will be posted by next Monday.

This episode is and interview with Rick Breneman of the Power Factor Show. One of his specialties is collecting firearms. I have not done a show on collecting firearms because I don’t know much about it, so I took this advantage of an expert’s opinion and want to share it with you. We talk about how to acquire collectible firearms, what type Rick collects and what he shoots! The Power Factor Show is also part of the Gun Rights Radio Network and our first video podcast. Enjoy this interview on collecting firearms. Warning, this show could cause a firearms collection addiction.

More discussion on rental guns. After going to the range with James Kimmerle, I did an interview with him. We discussed our thoughts about a Glock .357Sig, FN 9mm and Beretta PX4 sub compact 9mm. At the beginning of the show I cover some information on a recent back up gun match I shot with my P380. We also discussed James’ new High Noon Public Secret left handed holster for his PX4. We also spent some time discussing the Tucson shooting and why the anti gunners and media have it all wrong. I also make an announcement about a new fund raising effort for the 2nd Amendment foundation. This episode is another interview with Steve Zopfi, USPSA Master class shooter. We discuss one handed shooting, shooting around barricades, stance and chapter 4 of Brian Enos’ book, “Practical shooting beyond fundamentals” and a lot more. This is part one of the interview. I will post part 2 later this week. Whether you’re trying to get better in competition or trying to improve your skills with your carry gun (like me) I’m confident you will get a lot out of this show. Let me say up front, we had some internet connection challenges so I had to do some editing to make this sound well, so if it’s kind of choppy please forgive me. If you have any comments or questions, please email them to me and Steve and I will answer them on the show. Also don’t forget about the GRRN forum if you haven’t already signed up. Now it’s time for some fun, humor and the 12 Guns of Christmas. I do have some serious things to say also, but because it’s Christmas and the end of the year, I figured it was time for some light hearted gun stuff. Please remember to check out the links to all of the audio clips you hear on this show. Please remember to carry during the Holidays. It seems like the bad guys are out in full force during this time of the year. Don’t be a statistic and utilize your rights under the 2nd Amendment. You will also hear a recording from someone who does a great job of explaining why we should conceal carry our gun. Most of all have fun, stay out of trouble and let’s talk Christmas Guns!

Please join the Gun Rights Radio Network and participate in the forum there, you’ll find me too. There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

Jon Hodoway is my guest on this show. He agreed to be interviewed due to some challenges I had with some of his comments and quotes of me a few weeks ago. We had a very good civil discussion on concealed carry, caliber, choice of gun, training, stopping power and why he doesn’t like the .380acp! So download and listen as soon as you can. I found this to be very informative and while we don’t see eye to eye on everything, that’s a good thing. Jon does a good job of backing up his arguments and he makes some very convincing points. I like the fact that he used evidence that he’s found and not just pie in the sky theories. We also discussed some expensive 1911’s and a couple of revolvers.

Thanks for listening,

Before and after analysis of the Real World Gun Match that’s more defensive oriented than most competition matches in my opinion. I realize it’s still a game, but I shot my carry gun and used my carry gear/holster, etc. This is a relatively short show but I think you’ll enjoy the analysis and shooting results. I also got a chance to shoot a Wilson Combat CQB 1911, so tune in for a quick review on that gun. This Friday I’ll post my recent interview with Jon Hodoway. Good feedback and comments sent to me lately, so I start with some of my own comments and thank you’s. For the main segment, part 2 of my interview with Steve Zopfi. Some of this is a repeat of Episode 93 but not all of it, I left some of it out of the last show, now it’s included in this show. Steve and I do our best not to make this just a competitive shooting episode. We tie it into self defense techniques also.

Highlights:

  • Review of grip and natural point of aim
  • Alignment
  • Performing reloads
  • Posture
  • Grip pressure
  • Shooter’s elbow
  • The importance of training (excellent video sent by a listener)
  • Situational awareness

Check out this video sent to me by a listener, it’s excellent. Also remember to join me at the GRRN forum.

Indoor IDPA is a different experience than outdoor matches. This episode is a recap of a match I shot last Thursday. I also answer a couple of listener questions about Mili-Tec lubricant and slide play on a Glock. Then I will give you a before and after summary of some stages. I made some mistakes, also achieved some victories. I shot left handed and discussed lots of well designed stages for an indoor match. Shooting on the move, weak hand only shooting, interchanged ammo and shooting a modified Glock 19 in ESP category are subjects I discussed in the “before” segment. Segment 2 is about the results and what happened. I got some malfunction clearance practice and I even shot a magazine of carry ammo on one stage! I’ll tell you all about it. You’ll also hear a preview of next week’s episode with Steve Zopfi again as we discuss Brian Enos’ book Practical Shooting Beyond Fundamentals.
