I received 2 excellent pieces of audio from a couple of listeners. One is a pistol packing preacher and the other likes his Glock 32 and he’s a fellow Texan. I also covered some emails I’ve received and discuss some more information about defensive shotguns. Next week, get ready for a cool interview with Dr. John Meade, Tactical Medicine Instructor and author. Until then, I know you’ll enjoy this episode and many thanks to all who contributed this material. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show

Do you shoot moving targets? Do you shoot targets while you’re on the move? These are important skills to practice, because who stands still in a gunfight? Danny Cifuentes of Precision Targets is my guest on this show. We talk about the targets he makes, which are very high quality and we also discuss the importance of using his targets for practice. Please check out the links on the Gun Rights Radio Network forum and the discussion thread about this episode. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

CCW discussion seems to center around ammo, compact and subcompact guns, holsters, belts and magazines. So this episode has a little of all of these in it. I interviewed Jason Christensen and Un-named Trucker. Jason is the owner of Concealment Solutions and Un-named trucker is from the Roadgunner Podcast. We discussed the SIG 1911 that trucker is carrying, the new Sidewinder holster that Jason is making, the .357SIG round and even some airsoft gun discussion. I also had a chance to speak to Herman Gunter from the Pro Arms team recently and although that conversation is not on this podcast, I talk about some of that discussion regarding .357SIG and .40 caliber guns.  Thanks for downloading and listening and congratulations to the winners of my Shooter’s Club Podcast drawing! Merry Christmas to you and your family, the next show will be on Monday December 26, 2011. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show

Eric Shelton, former host of the Handgun Podcast is my guest host for this episode. I decided to take a little time off and asked Eric to jump in and fill in for me and he did a terrific job, as I knew he would. He discusses topics such as the NRA and other gun rights organizations, an update on his status and what’s in the future for him, and also concealed carry handguns. As always, Eric provides thought provoking and useful information for all firearms enthusiasts and concealed carry advocates. I miss his podcast, but also understand how life takes twists and turns. So I think you’ll enjoy this treat as much as I have. Thank you Eric for helping me out and best of luck in all that you do. Don’t miss this episode. I’m taking 2 weeks off right now to get a few things done at work. Next week, you will hear a cool interview that’s already recorded and I will be back on November 14, 2011 with coverage of Suarez International’s, Advanced Close Range Gunfighting course. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

I shot the Texas Tactical IDPA match on October 15, 2011 at the Cedar Ridge Range in San Antonio. You’ll hear coverage of the match from the range and an interview with a shooter on my squad who shot his XD9 for the first time. You’ll also hear stage descriptions and the results of a few stages. I finished 8th out of 27 shooters in the SSP division. I’ll take that, since I didn’t shoot a match in almost 6 weeks previous to this match. I was in “gamer” mode and shot my Glock 34, Comp-Tac OWB. belt holster and concealed with an IDPA vest. You’ll experience the match in audio format from the range. Links and discussion can be found on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. Thanks for downloading and listening and don’t forget, this will be your last chance to get version 3 of my Shooter’s Club Podcast. Click the buy now button, to help out my show, if you wish.

Listener audio comments are now coming in with regularity. That’s great. Keep them coming, seems like everyone has some quality topics to talk about. So this is not a complete episode. It’s a quick bonus podcast at the end of the week for you to listen to an pick some ideas on open carry/vs. concealed, Theis holsters, Glock’s recoil spring exchange program and low light shooting and low light concealed carry consideration. Thanks for downloading and listening, I’ll be back on Monday with Episode 146. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Episode 130 – Modifying handguns. Competition guns vs. Carry guns.

Modifying your handgun is something almost every handgun owner decides to do. Many experts in the field of self defense and the legalities of doing so, recommend not modifying your carry gun. Especially the trigger. Sights are the most common modification. Whether you have a 1911 or a polymer wonder, or a SIG, Beretta, Taurus or whatever, it seems as though there’s so much talk and decision making that goes into the modification of one’s handgun. Even revolver shooters tend to favor trigger jobs. In this episode I start with responding to a few listener emails, then get into an interview with Steve Zopfi about trigger modifications. We don’t talk much about competition shooting, mostly we discussed modifying carry guns. He discusses his STI and his Glock. So thanks for downloading and listening and links can be found at the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show

You never know when and where someone who want’s to harm you, will strike. Often times we are in a compromised position or perhaps your attacker is even so close, that they are at arm’s length or even closer! Violent encounters don’t happen like a competition match. There’s no timer, no scoring system and no re-shoot. Not to make fun of competition at all, because as you know, I totally enjoy it and support the shooting sports. But the main topic of this show is what to think about when shooting at arm’s length distance. So I reviewed and excellent article by Jon Payne of Suarez International on this subject. Some of this is from my personal experience during the training I recently took under him. Also, Jon Hodoway has more to say on how to pick a firearms trainer and ammunition ballistics. You’ll also learn about the Wall Drill. A dry fire practice technique taught by an Army Reserve shooting instructor. I also cover some listener emails on subjects like the Glock 26 as a back up gun and appendix carry. Finally, you’ll hear my review of the Smith and Wesson model 39-2. I recently had a chance to shoot one for the first time. Links for all of these can be found on the Gun Rights Radio Network forum. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

A lot of people think they need to make serious modifications to their gun to be able to shoot it well. A couple weeks ago, a shooting buddy of mine decided to pour about $600 worth of upgrades into his new Glock 21SF, then did a range test to see if he could shoot it better. Listen to this episode to find out the results. Are modifications really worth it? Is there a point of diminishing returns? Would you be better off to spend that same money on ammo and training? Do you need a trigger job? What is the 1,000 round trigger job? These are questions I attempt to answer in my own way on this show. You’ll also hear a brief post match discussion between me and Steve and Rick from the Powerfactor Show. For those of you who have emailed me questions and comments, I’ve also handled some of the backlog of emails I’ve received. Thanks for sending them in. A little over a week ago I competed at the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls, TX. Although I didn’t do as well as I wanted, I’m glad I took on the challenge. Competition does help you improve your ability to shoot fast and accurately. Why would that be a bad thing? So in this episode, I interviewed people at the range who were shooting with me and also recorded some of the stage descriptions given by the RO’s of the match. Also, Steve Zopfi and Rick Brenneman from the PowerFactor Show joined me for a discussion after day one as to what we liked, disliked and some success and failure stories. This episode is as close to being as I can bring you in an audio podcast. I think you’ll enjoy it. Thanks for downloading and listening. Links are posted on the GRRN forum. This week I address the long backlog of listener feedback and questions. Some of the topics are the 1,000 round trigger job, IDPA, gun ownership and mental health issues, Glock triggers, magazine capacity, training and even a few disagreements with some of the points made on a few of my recent shows. I think that’s a good thing because there are a lot of ways to defend yourself with a handgun and differences of opinion are healthy. This was recorded about a week in advance so if you’ve sent me a questions or comment within the last week, I will get to it on next week’s show. Thanks for your comments! Please feel free to join the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and make more comments there if you wish. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Last week I took a trip to Montreal, Canada for the entire week on business. Therefore I was not able to carry my gun. It gave me a feeling of being naked, without it. Once concealed carry becomes a habit and part of your wardrobe and your lifestyle, have you ever noticed that if you don’t carry your gun, you get the feeling that something is missing? I did, so I decided to make that the main topic of this episode. Once carrying a gun becomes second nature, you’ll probably notice this. Also, aren’t there times when one needs to downsize their firearm, depending on their activity and mode of dress required? I think the answer is yes. So you won’t feel naked because you’re not carrying a gun. Some experts say “dress around your gun” which is fine in theory, but there are times when that’s just not possible, so I discuss that too. Remember to check out the Gun Rights Radio Network forum to find out the winner of the free ticket to Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas on May 28th and 29th and the High Noon holsters I’m giving away. Shooting range discussion is the main topic of this show. As many of you know, I like to shoot the Real World Gun shooting match at Dallas Pistol Club. After the match, I interviewed 3 shooters who also listen to this show to get their opinions on the match and what they learned from it. We also discussed carry guns. One shooter, who is an avid USPSA shooter, kind of surprised me when we talked about his carry gun. I really stunk in this match. I had one stage that was horrible and it destroyed my score. But I was able to pull off a couple of real good shots that made the whole match worthwhile. As I’ve mentioned quite often, you just can’t practice some of this stuff at a square range. So this podcast should help you experience some of it. I also answer some listener questions and emails. Next week I will do a review of the High Noon Alter Ego and the High Noon Hideaway holsters I’ve been using lately. Don’t forget to join the GRRN forum and my YouTube Channel too. Too much discussion takes place about guns and shooting equipment that really doesn’t matter too much. What I mean by that is that it doesn’t help your ability to shoot and defend yourself too much. My guest, Jon Hodoway, on this show really makes this point quite nicely. He also recently won the Central Florida Tactical Conference shooting match. He’s also a firearms trainer for the Massad Ayoob Group. Among other topics such as Glocks that sometimes jam, range rental guns, how to test a gun, and the Ron Avery drill, we spend quite a bit of time talking about the less than important stuff that internet ninja’s and internet commandos spend a lot of time on. You may find yourself asking the question, what should I really do to improve my defensive shooting skills? I think you will find that answer in this podcast. – Bob Mayne, Handgun World Show

So much good feedback and questions have been sent to me in the past few weeks. I really appreciate it, so in this episode I get caught up on quite a bit of my backlog of emails. This show includes information about High Noon Holsters, the Kel Tec PLR-16, Texas Gun Talk forums, stopping power, Center Axis Relock, testing handguns and more. Most of this show is contributed by people on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and emails sent to me recently. I consider this a show produced by the listeners. I’m just the host and the guy that puts it together. Thanks for listening and safe shooting! Bob Mayne – HandgunWorld Show
