On December 14, 2010 a tragic shooting took place during a Florida School Board meeting. Jon Hodoway and I discuss the events that took place and what it means to all of us who conceal or open carry on a daily basis. Jon did his homework on this event, reading transcripts and analyzing videos. I think you’ll find his conclusions and opinions quite compelling. Here are a few questions I would like to pose to you as you listen to this. First, this happened in a gun free zone, so have you ever wondered how dangerous gun free zones really are? Secondly, why do people not believe that something like this can never happen to them? Third, are you prepared? Please take this information to heart and really think about what’ being said in this show and thanks for downloading and enjoy the interview. By the way, if you want to support my show consider investing in the digital download or CD I’ve just released. It’s packed with good shooting skills information, interviews and audio clips, exclusive only to those who help support my show.

Now it’s time for some fun, humor and the 12 Guns of Christmas. I do have some serious things to say also, but because it’s Christmas and the end of the year, I figured it was time for some light hearted gun stuff. Please remember to check out the links to all of the audio clips you hear on this show. Please remember to carry during the Holidays. It seems like the bad guys are out in full force during this time of the year. Don’t be a statistic and utilize your rights under the 2nd Amendment. You will also hear a recording from someone who does a great job of explaining why we should conceal carry our gun. Most of all have fun, stay out of trouble and let’s talk Christmas Guns!

There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

Jon Hodoway is my guest on this show. He agreed to be interviewed due to some challenges I had with some of his comments and quotes of me a few weeks ago. We had a very good civil discussion on concealed carry, caliber, choice of gun, training, stopping power and why he doesn’t like the .380acp! So download and listen as soon as you can. I found this to be very informative and while we don’t see eye to eye on everything, that’s a good thing. Jon does a good job of backing up his arguments and he makes some very convincing points. I like the fact that he used evidence that he’s found and not just pie in the sky theories. We also discussed some expensive 1911’s and a couple of revolvers.

Anatomy of Ending a Fight is important to know in case of the unfortunate event that occurs when you have to use your handgun. Please keep in mind, I do not in any way advocate killing or using lethal force unless it’s absolutely necessary. Please educate yourself on when to use deadly force. Courses by Massad Ayoob and Tom Givens are excellent resources on this topic. But if you do have to use your gun I hope you find some good basics as to how you can more likely stop your attackers. I’ll discuss things like CNS hits, RS hits, CS hits and effective stopping power techniques. Please read an excellent post on this too sent to me by a listener. Good stuff complete with a video! You’ll also hear why I really don’t think caliber is a big deal. Big and slow vs. small and fast, it really doesn’t matter, in my opinion. What matters more is how effectively you can react and place your shots and where you place them.

Eric Shelton from the Handgun Podcast joins me this week to discuss our podcasts, how they came about, why we do this and how we are similar, yet different in a few ways. We discuss ideas about concealed carry guns, holster, sights, lights on guns, revolvers, sights, trigger pulls and more. We agree on some things and differ on others but I have to let you know that Eric’s show has certainly been an inspiration to me and one of the influences that made me start this podcast. Eric and I also discuss why we like to carry a Glock 19 and how I started shooting 1911’s in IDPA. For those of you that don’t know, Eric’s show is also part of the Gun Rights Radio Network. Last Friday I was on his podcast, so you may want to listen to that first, because this is sort of a “Part 2” of that episode. Both interviews were recorded at the same time.

Listener feedback and comments are the topics this week. I’ve received a lot of emails and first let me say thank you! In this show I talk about a mixed bag of gun talk again, why I have 3 CCW licenses, Springfield XDM’s, Revolvers and some corrections to my revolver episode, open carry in Wisconsin, ammo recoil, self training with a handgun, gun free zones, IDPA and more. I’ll even discuss a listener’s email as to why he carries, it’s a good story, you’ll want to hear it. They are all in response to you, the loyal listener. Revolvers are a good choice for a self defense handgun. They are not my first choice, but at the request of a listener, I did this show on my experience shooting 2 particular revolvers. James Kimmerle and I went to a range, rented 2 .357 magnum revolvers and we give you our straight talk review on them.

Highlights:

  • Simplicity of the revolver, good or bad?
  • Firing a revolver from a pocket.
  • Capacity of a self defense revolver.
  • Reliability pros and cons.
  • Revolver myth busting.
  • Is 5-6 round capacity enough?
  • Every time you pull the trigger?
  • Cost vs. features.

Can you carry a big gun? Why not? If so, why do you carry a large gun? Questions often asked, so I give you my answers. First I start with a review of the .357SIG, after I went to the range and shot a Glock 33. The Pro Arms Podcast recent review of the .357SIG got me interested in what all the fuss was about. I must say, I was quite impressed. Then I talk about an IDPA experience and a little bit of news and listener feedback. The main topic is carrying a big gun and why you should do it.

Highlights:

  • .357SIG Glock 33 review.
  • Using caliber conversion barrels in .40 cal and .357sig guns.
  • Using the wrong recoil spring in Glock 19.
  • What happens when you clean 2 guns at the same time.
  • IDPA match recap.
  • Big Slims Firearms store controversy.
  • How the right belt and holster help you comfortably carry a big gun.
  • Compromises in concealed carry and why I think you shouldn’t make too many of them.
  • The case for carrying a high capacity weapon.

Mouseguns and pocket pistols are excellent back up guns.  In this episode I discuss how they are good back up guns but should not be used as your primary carry gun.  I define what is a mousegun, what calibers are available, what ammo to use in them and how to carry mouseguns.  I own  Kahr 380.  I’ll discuss that too.  I also answer a listener’s question about RBCD ammo.

Highlights:

  • Pro’s and Con’s of RBCD ammo.
  • The Box of Truth review of RBCD ammo.
  • The compromise of carrying a handgun.
  • What is a mousegun?
  • Stopping power of mouseguns.
  • A mousegun is better than no gun.

  • Why a mousegun should not be your primary carry gun.

Selecting the right ammo to use in your handgun is a challenge.  As you’ve heard me mention, I like Corbon DPX, but there are many good loads out there.  A listener emailed me a question and asked me my opinion on using reloaded ammo, so this episode is partially dedicated to answer that question.  I also play an audio clip of Massad Ayoob on The Judicious Use of Force.  I thought it would be appropriate because the ammo discussion plays right into how careful you have to be when carrying a gun.

Before listening to this podcast, I suggest you go to my survival website and listen to Episode 48 – Don’t Talk to The Police.  It goes along with this message.

Highlights:

  • When should you use reloaded ammunition?
  • Does it help you or hurt you in self defense?
  • Is it legal?
  • What does using handloaded ammunition do to your gun’s warranty?
  • How ammo prices have persuaded many to reload.
  • Why I don’t recommend that you use reloaded ammo for self defense.
  • How vitally important it is that we know our responsibility and the gravity of carrying a gun for self defense.
  • What are the legal consequences of you using your gun?

Highlights:

  • Who are the most likely people to commit crimes?
  • How the Boy Scout Motto relates to carrying a gun.
  • The gun is a tool, your mind is your weapon.
  • Why women should carry guns?

  • Do you need a specific training gun?
