Will competition shooting get you killed? That question has caused a lot of arguments in the gun community. Combat veteran Ben Branam joins me to share his combat experiences and to help answer the question of if and when competition shooting helps  you in a gunfight. We also discussed the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado and the success of Samuel Williams using his pistol to repel 2 guys who tried to rob an internet cafe in Florida. A recent shooting at a college in California has sparked more controversy about whether students at universities should be able to carry concealed handguns for self defense. I think they should be allowed to. So this episode is based on an excellent article in Guns and Ammo magazine about the subject of concealed carry on campus. I will of course provide a link to that article on the GRRN forum. The first half of this episode is about listener voice mails on open carry, Kahr pistols, IDPA and Ben Branam’s international incident that almost happened. There’s a new shooting sport evolving rapidly. The Lone Star Shooting Association founded by Gary Burris and Dale Hunnicut. In this episode I interviewed Gary Burris the founder. I like their mission, to raise money for Gun Rights organizations. I also like their scoring system and the way they classify the different types of shooters. Gary was also a speaker at the Gun Rights Policy Conference about international gun laws and policies. You will be interested to hear what he has to say about the UN’s attempt at gun control. Steve Zopfi, co-host of the PowerFactor Show is my guest host for this episode. He talks about how to avoid competition burnout and even how many IDPA and USPSA clubs suffer burnout among their match directors and range officers. Steve also talks about how to avoid individual burnout and how to keep the shooting competitions relevant and interesting for those who do a lot of competing. Even if you’re new to competition shooting, you’ll learn some valuable insights from Steve that will pay off for you in the future. I will be back for Episode 150 next week. This episode was pre recorded almost 2 weeks ago. But since I’m taking a brief vacation from this show, I decided to make this episode 148, even though I made a mistake in the intro and called it episode 147.  Jon Hodoway joins me on this episode to discuss how to get ready for a MAG 40 class. Naturally we also discuss a few other topics as well such as IDPA. Next week will be another guest podcast (episode 149) done by a special guest, then I will be back in real time for Episode 150 and a lot of cool stuff planned for the future! I shot the Texas Tactical IDPA match on October 15, 2011 at the Cedar Ridge Range in San Antonio. You’ll hear coverage of the match from the range and an interview with a shooter on my squad who shot his XD9 for the first time. You’ll also hear stage descriptions and the results of a few stages. I finished 8th out of 27 shooters in the SSP division. I’ll take that, since I didn’t shoot a match in almost 6 weeks previous to this match. I was in “gamer” mode and shot my Glock 34, Comp-Tac OWB. belt holster and concealed with an IDPA vest. You’ll experience the match in audio format from the range. Links and discussion can be found on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. I’ve received quite a few emails asking me, “what is a 1,000 round trigger job?” First, let me say, I didn’t make that up. I read it somewhere on a forum and can’t remember where, but I’m sure that expression has been used before. So during the first segment, I’ll answer in detail what I mean by that. Trigger jobs are one of the most talked about modifications on a handgun, yet it seems like some people spend too much money on them and don’t get a good enough benefit. Most decent quality guns have triggers that can be mastered with enough practice. That’s my main point, but listen for more details. During segment 2, I respond to my backlog of listener emails. Please keep them coming, I will get to most of them. Links can be found on the GRRN forum. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show

Well, I just couldn’t stay away from the airwaves until Oct 10th, and this is a special announcement, so I wanted to get it out to you now. In this episode Jon Hodoway of the Pro Arms Team, announces the MAG 40 class (Massad Ayoob Group) he’s sponsoring and The HandgunWorld Show is helping him with the promotion. There are a few surprises in this episode too. Links to the class sign up will be on the GRRN forum. We discuss MAG 40, what type of training it is, why you should include it on your bucket list, and we also get into a discussion about the IDPA World Championship match and the rules of IDPA. Don’t miss this episode. Next Monday, I’ll be posting more audio from the Gun Rights Policy Conference. Thanks for downloading and listening. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show

I had the pleasure of interviewing a professional pilot who also carries concealed and is a competition shooter. So I interviewed him and got his unique perspective on concealed carry. We discussed the issue of concealed carry on airplanes and whether it would be a good idea or not and also his testing of RBCD ammo. We also discussed his M&P .40c and our situational awareness when carrying in public, especially a restaurant. This episode begins with a few audio comments from listeners and my follow up answers regarding open carry and gun store clerks. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show

Every shooting competition has a set of rules and by laws that they adhere to. However, there are inconsistencies in the way they are written and enforced. In this episode, Steve and Rick from the Powerfactor Show interview with me and we discuss how we would change the rules of IDPA and USPSA if we were in charge. So naturally this is heavily competition related. For those of you who shoot these 2 sports, I think you’ll find yourself relating quite a bit to this subject. Thanks for downloading and listening. A lot of people think they need to make serious modifications to their gun to be able to shoot it well. A couple weeks ago, a shooting buddy of mine decided to pour about $600 worth of upgrades into his new Glock 21SF, then did a range test to see if he could shoot it better. Listen to this episode to find out the results. Are modifications really worth it? Is there a point of diminishing returns? Would you be better off to spend that same money on ammo and training? Do you need a trigger job? What is the 1,000 round trigger job? These are questions I attempt to answer in my own way on this show. You’ll also hear a brief post match discussion between me and Steve and Rick from the Powerfactor Show. For those of you who have emailed me questions and comments, I’ve also handled some of the backlog of emails I’ve received. Thanks for sending them in.
