A little over a week ago I competed at the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls, TX. Although I didn’t do as well as I wanted, I’m glad I took on the challenge. Competition does help you improve your ability to shoot fast and accurately. Why would that be a bad thing? So in this episode, I interviewed people at the range who were shooting with me and also recorded some of the stage descriptions given by the RO’s of the match. Also, Steve Zopfi and Rick Brenneman from the PowerFactor Show joined me for a discussion after day one as to what we liked, disliked and some success and failure stories. This week, Steve and Rick from the Powerfactor Show talk with me about getting ready for the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls Texas next weekend. So naturally this episode is about competition shooting. We discuss what guns we are shooting, what spare parts we are bringing, what courses of fire to expect, they type of holsters we will be using, what divisions and classifications we are shooting in and what shooters we expect to see and interact with at the match. I just finished the 2 Day “Close Range Gunfighting” course with Suarez International this past weekend and it was great. So tune in next weekend and I will bring you interviews from shooters at the course and a recap of the course. Then, the following week, you’ll hear Steve and Rick and probably a few other shooters from Double Tap range talk about what happened at the match. For now, enjoy the preview of the competition. This week I address the long backlog of listener feedback and questions. Some of the topics are the 1,000 round trigger job, IDPA, gun ownership and mental health issues, Glock triggers, magazine capacity, training and even a few disagreements with some of the points made on a few of my recent shows. I think that’s a good thing because there are a lot of ways to defend yourself with a handgun and differences of opinion are healthy. This episode starts with a review of the Taurus PT 24/7 DS, 9mm that a listener let me borrow for T&E. Overall, I give this gun high marks. There were some features I didn’t like, but I have to say that this is a very reasonably priced gun that gives you a lot of features and it was very reliable. But I give you my usual unbiased review after shooting over 100 rounds through it. The second half of the show is dedicated to listener emails and questions. I also pick on IDPA a little bit even though I love the sport. This is the last week to take advantage of the drawing for a free admission to the CRG Suarez International Class in Dallas this month. I did a 3 way Skype call with Steve Zopfi and Rick Breneman, hosts of the Power Factor Show. This turned into a roundtable discussion on everything from concealed carry to training, NRA certification and CCW laws. This conversation took a lot of interesting twists and turns. It’s fun when a planned conversation changes course a few times. This is un-edited, except for the trailer at the end. Steve even challenges me on a couple of issues, which I think was kind of cool. Rick talks a lot about his NRA certifications and the value of the NRA courses. Steve discusses the IPSC 101 training classes he does and in addition, we discussed how we feel about the training required for concealed carry permits. Very little discussion is on what happens in competition however. Shooting range discussion is the main topic of this show. As many of you know, I like to shoot the Real World Gun shooting match at Dallas Pistol Club. After the match, I interviewed 3 shooters who also listen to this show to get their opinions on the match and what they learned from it. We also discussed carry guns. One shooter, who is an avid USPSA shooter, kind of surprised me when we talked about his carry gun. I really stunk in this match. I had one stage that was horrible and it destroyed my score. But I was able to pull off a couple of real good shots that made the whole match worthwhile. As I’ve mentioned quite often, you just can’t practice some of this stuff at a square range. So this podcast should help you experience some of it. I also answer some listener questions and emails. So once a month I interview Steve Zopfi. He’s one of the hosts of the PowerFactor Show, a video podcast on competition shooting. There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

In this episode I get taught a new way of performing a reload. We also break down the 5 step reload into on of the best explanations I’ve ever heard in the audio version.
