This week is a mixed bag again, because I didn’t really have only one single topic, so I combined a few topics into one show. You’ll hear a rebuttal from un-named trucker regarding my review of the Glock 26 a few weeks ago. Then Al Vennemeyer from Stealth Defense Holsters joins me again for a follow up from a few weeks ago. I also discuss the oppressive Maryland gun laws and why they really don’t allow concealed carry. Generation 4 Glocks are also a topic of this show. Also many thanks to Jason at Concealment Solutions for adding an extra giveaway to my fundraiser. Links can be found on the GRRN forum. Once again, thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, Handgunworld Show

You never know when and where someone who want’s to harm you, will strike. Often times we are in a compromised position or perhaps your attacker is even so close, that they are at arm’s length or even closer! Violent encounters don’t happen like a competition match. There’s no timer, no scoring system and no re-shoot. Not to make fun of competition at all, because as you know, I totally enjoy it and support the shooting sports. But the main topic of this show is what to think about when shooting at arm’s length distance. So I reviewed and excellent article by Jon Payne of Suarez International on this subject. Some of this is from my personal experience during the training I recently took under him. Also, Jon Hodoway has more to say on how to pick a firearms trainer and ammunition ballistics. You’ll also learn about the Wall Drill. A dry fire practice technique taught by an Army Reserve shooting instructor. I also cover some listener emails on subjects like the Glock 26 as a back up gun and appendix carry. Finally, you’ll hear my review of the Smith and Wesson model 39-2. I recently had a chance to shoot one for the first time. Links for all of these can be found on the Gun Rights Radio Network forum. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

A little over a week ago I competed at the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls, TX. Although I didn’t do as well as I wanted, I’m glad I took on the challenge. Competition does help you improve your ability to shoot fast and accurately. Why would that be a bad thing? So in this episode, I interviewed people at the range who were shooting with me and also recorded some of the stage descriptions given by the RO’s of the match. Also, Steve Zopfi and Rick Brenneman from the PowerFactor Show joined me for a discussion after day one as to what we liked, disliked and some success and failure stories. This episode is as close to being as I can bring you in an audio podcast. I think you’ll enjoy it. Thanks for downloading and listening. Links are posted on the GRRN forum. A little over a week ago I took Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas. Many listeners were there to train with me. It was intense and taught us about the defensive mindset and how to safely and efficiently use our gun to stop the situation if it ever got to that point. So I decided to record a little bit of what happened at the course. I interviewed other students and also had a chance to record our instructor discuss the significant points of the class. Short of actually being there, this recording should help you share the experience. Please try to get to one of these classes. I think it’s a wise investment if you carry a gun and plan to use it as a defensive tool. We cover after action assessments, SUL, shooting with both hands and a lot more. Thanks for listening. I will post links related to this show on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. Thanks for listening. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Al Vennemeyer, owner of Stealth Defense Strut Holsters, Inc., joins me as my guest. We discuss his new holster design and why he feels it solves some problems that concealed carry sometimes presents. He sent me one for T&E, so I will carry it for a few weeks and let you know what I think. Also, I shot an IDPA match at Cross Timbers IDPA recently and shot quite well, but made a critical error. It didn’t cost me much but it could have. So the first segment I recap that particular stage for you. I’ve also included some responses to listeners questions and emails in segment 3. I did a 3 way Skype call with Steve Zopfi and Rick Breneman, hosts of the Power Factor Show. This turned into a roundtable discussion on everything from concealed carry to training, NRA certification and CCW laws. This conversation took a lot of interesting twists and turns. It’s fun when a planned conversation changes course a few times. This is un-edited, except for the trailer at the end. Steve even challenges me on a couple of issues, which I think was kind of cool. Rick talks a lot about his NRA certifications and the value of the NRA courses. Steve discusses the IPSC 101 training classes he does and in addition, we discussed how we feel about the training required for concealed carry permits. Very little discussion is on what happens in competition however. Thanks for listening and please remember that everyone who invests in version 2 of my Shooters Club Podcast gets a free raffle ticket, to win an admission to Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course on May 28,29th in Dallas. Winner will be announced May 16th. Click here to get signed up. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Shooting range discussion is the main topic of this show. As many of you know, I like to shoot the Real World Gun shooting match at Dallas Pistol Club. After the match, I interviewed 3 shooters who also listen to this show to get their opinions on the match and what they learned from it. We also discussed carry guns. One shooter, who is an avid USPSA shooter, kind of surprised me when we talked about his carry gun. I really stunk in this match. I had one stage that was horrible and it destroyed my score. But I was able to pull off a couple of real good shots that made the whole match worthwhile. As I’ve mentioned quite often, you just can’t practice some of this stuff at a square range. So this podcast should help you experience some of it. I also answer some listener questions and emails. Next week I will do a review of the High Noon Alter Ego and the High Noon Hideaway holsters I’ve been using lately. Don’t forget to join the GRRN forum and my YouTube Channel too. Can you fight with your handgun? What I mean by that, is can you fight your way out of trouble if you’re attacked? I’m not advocating looking for a gunfight, please don’t assume that. What I am advocating is the training needed to fight your way out of trouble and stay alive. That’s really why we carry a gun, isn’t it? So this episode is interview number 2 with Jon Payne, staff instructor at Suarez International. We discuss the upcoming Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas on May 28th and 29th. in this interview, you’ll gain valuable insight to the “self defense” mindset and tactics even if you don’t attend this course. We will definine in more detail, getting off the X, dynamic movement, defending SUL, defensive tactics and a lot more. Please remember to join the GRRN forum or post a comment on this website if you have comments or questions. Also, version 2 of my “Shooter’s Club” premium podcast will be released in about a week (slightly late.) Click the “Shooter’s Club” link at the top of this website. Old guns are fun to talk about and also fun to shoot. Not only are they pieces of history, but many old guns are well made. In this show, I interview Rick Breneman again, he’s one of the hosts of the Power Factor Show on GRRN. He’s an accumulator and shooter of old, historic firearms. So this is sort of a Part 2 of the interview from a few weeks ago. We cover some more information on shooting, reloading and collecting old guns. We discuss military surplus rifles, old 1911’s and shooting them. We also get a little off topic and talk about the .357SIG. Will it be obscure in the future? Then we tie it in to shooting old guns in competition and carrying them for self defense. There are actually 2 interviews in this show, the 2nd one is regarding classification in IDPA and USPSA, with Steve Zopfi of the Power Factor Show. Please remember to join me at the GRRN Forum and also consider an investment in version one of my CD/Digital download. Version 2 will be available in about 2 weeks. 50% of proceeds benefit the Second Amendment Foundation. Thanks for listening.

Shooting events such as IDPA and USPSA are fun games, but I’ve always believed they can help you practice gun handling skills such as drawing from your holster, grip, alignment, stance and shooting on the move. So once a month I interview Steve Zopfi. He’s one of the hosts of the PowerFactor Show, a video podcast on competition shooting. In this episode we discuss Chapter 5 of Brian Enos’ book, “Practical Shooting, Beyond Fundamentals.” We do our best to tie this into self defense skills as well. In this episode you will gain some valuable insight into the world of competition shooting no matter what gun you are using. I also answer some listener questions in the beginning of the show. Please remember to join the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and also, from now until March 15, 2011, I am donating 50% of the proceeds from my Shooters Club CD/Download to the Second Amendment Foundation! This episode is about single handed shooting and perfecting your shooting techniques. I also got around to answering a backlog of listener questions and feedback on Taurus guns, the importance of training and a lot more. This show was recorded long before the tragic shooting in Arizona. Next week I will have some comments about that and dedicate part of the show to that subject. Please join the forum at the Gun Rights Radio Network if you haven’t and don’t forget to comment on what you carry in your vehicle. I also recently put up a new video on my YouTube Channel. At the end of this month I will cut off sales of version one of my CD/Digital Download and begin recording version 2 which will be released near the end of February 2011. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne.

On December 14, 2010 a tragic shooting took place during a Florida School Board meeting. Jon Hodoway and I discuss the events that took place and what it means to all of us who conceal or open carry on a daily basis. Jon did his homework on this event, reading transcripts and analyzing videos. I think you’ll find his conclusions and opinions quite compelling. Here are a few questions I would like to pose to you as you listen to this. First, this happened in a gun free zone, so have you ever wondered how dangerous gun free zones really are? Secondly, why do people not believe that something like this can never happen to them? Third, are you prepared? Please take this information to heart and really think about what’ being said in this show and thanks for downloading and enjoy the interview. By the way, if you want to support my show consider investing in the digital download or CD I’ve just released. It’s packed with good shooting skills information, interviews and audio clips, exclusive only to those who help support my show.

Jon Hodoway is my guest on this show. He agreed to be interviewed due to some challenges I had with some of his comments and quotes of me a few weeks ago. We had a very good civil discussion on concealed carry, caliber, choice of gun, training, stopping power and why he doesn’t like the .380acp! So download and listen as soon as you can. I found this to be very informative and while we don’t see eye to eye on everything, that’s a good thing. Jon does a good job of backing up his arguments and he makes some very convincing points. I like the fact that he used evidence that he’s found and not just pie in the sky theories. We also discussed some expensive 1911’s and a couple of revolvers.

Thanks for listening,

Good feedback and comments sent to me lately, so I start with some of my own comments and thank you’s. For the main segment, part 2 of my interview with Steve Zopfi. Some of this is a repeat of Episode 93 but not all of it, I left some of it out of the last show, now it’s included in this show. Steve and I do our best not to make this just a competitive shooting episode. We tie it into self defense techniques also.

Highlights:

  • Review of grip and natural point of aim
  • Alignment
  • Performing reloads
  • Posture
  • Grip pressure
  • Shooter’s elbow
  • The importance of training (excellent video sent by a listener)
  • Situational awareness

Check out this video sent to me by a listener, it’s excellent. Also remember to join me at the GRRN forum.
