A little over a week ago I competed at the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls, TX. Although I didn’t do as well as I wanted, I’m glad I took on the challenge. Competition does help you improve your ability to shoot fast and accurately. Why would that be a bad thing? So in this episode, I interviewed people at the range who were shooting with me and also recorded some of the stage descriptions given by the RO’s of the match. Also, Steve Zopfi and Rick Brenneman from the PowerFactor Show joined me for a discussion after day one as to what we liked, disliked and some success and failure stories. This episode is as close to being as I can bring you in an audio podcast. I think you’ll enjoy it. Thanks for downloading and listening. Links are posted on the GRRN forum. A little over a week ago I took Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas. Many listeners were there to train with me. It was intense and taught us about the defensive mindset and how to safely and efficiently use our gun to stop the situation if it ever got to that point. So I decided to record a little bit of what happened at the course. I interviewed other students and also had a chance to record our instructor discuss the significant points of the class. Short of actually being there, this recording should help you share the experience. Please try to get to one of these classes. I think it’s a wise investment if you carry a gun and plan to use it as a defensive tool. We cover after action assessments, SUL, shooting with both hands and a lot more. Thanks for listening. I will post links related to this show on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. Thanks for listening. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

This week, Steve and Rick from the Powerfactor Show talk with me about getting ready for the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls Texas next weekend. So naturally this episode is about competition shooting. We discuss what guns we are shooting, what spare parts we are bringing, what courses of fire to expect, they type of holsters we will be using, what divisions and classifications we are shooting in and what shooters we expect to see and interact with at the match. I just finished the 2 Day “Close Range Gunfighting” course with Suarez International this past weekend and it was great. So tune in next weekend and I will bring you interviews from shooters at the course and a recap of the course. Then, the following week, you’ll hear Steve and Rick and probably a few other shooters from Double Tap range talk about what happened at the match. For now, enjoy the preview of the competition. Too much discussion takes place about guns and shooting equipment that really doesn’t matter too much. What I mean by that is that it doesn’t help your ability to shoot and defend yourself too much. My guest, Jon Hodoway, on this show really makes this point quite nicely. He also recently won the Central Florida Tactical Conference shooting match. He’s also a firearms trainer for the Massad Ayoob Group. Among other topics such as Glocks that sometimes jam, range rental guns, how to test a gun, and the Ron Avery drill, we spend quite a bit of time talking about the less than important stuff that internet ninja’s and internet commandos spend a lot of time on. You may find yourself asking the question, what should I really do to improve my defensive shooting skills? I think you will find that answer in this podcast. – Bob Mayne, Handgun World Show

2 fellow shooters joined me at the shooting range recently and we talked afterwards. One is from Serbia and the other is from Southern California. Both now live in the gun friendly state of Texas. You will hear their perspective of what happened at the Real World Gun match at Dallas pistol club and how it has helped them improve their shooting skills and self defense gun handling techniques. I also cover some more listener feedback. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for a new shooter to get started I think you will enjoy this show. They shot their carry guns and give listeners a unique perspective on what that’s like too. Please remember to join me at the GRRN forum and my YouTube Channel.  Also, I am donating 1/2 of the proceeds from my “Shooter’s Club” CD/Digital download to the Second Amendment Foundation, now through March 15th. Before and after analysis of the Real World Gun Match that’s more defensive oriented than most competition matches in my opinion. I realize it’s still a game, but I shot my carry gun and used my carry gear/holster, etc. This is a relatively short show but I think you’ll enjoy the analysis and shooting results. I also got a chance to shoot a Wilson Combat CQB 1911, so tune in for a quick review on that gun. This Friday I’ll post my recent interview with Jon Hodoway. Remember to join the GRRN forum if you’re not already and check out my Facebook Page, YouTube Videos and Shooters Legion page.

Also, if you haven’t ordered my CD or digital download yet, let me encourage you to do so. You’ll support my show but more importantly, Steve Zopfi and I share some very nice shooting skills advice from Brian Enos’ book. Most people are asking for an .mp3 digital download so reserve your copy today. Just click the buy now button at www.handgunworld.com.

Shot a Low Light IDPA match last Thursday. James and I talk about it and hope to encourage you to train in low light. Get a good flashlight and learn how to use it or a rail mounted light on your gun! A skill you definitely need to practice.

Highlights:

  • What we learned and observed at the match.
  • Why I need a better flashlight!
  • Techniques used by good shooters with flashlights.
  • Are night sights effective for low light situations?
  • Get a rail mounted light for your home defense gun.
  • Lots of good listener feedback.
  • More on why guns jam.

Thanks for listening, don’t forget the Freedom Raffle, Join the Gun Rights Radio Network forum and interact with me and other podcasters and listeners and check out my YouTube Channel. I just posted a new video up there.

Why do handguns jam and malfunction?  In this episode I’ll answer that and give you some personal experiences to go with it.  Often times it’s not the gun’s fault.  Sometimes it is.  I’ll explain both and discuss what’s related to ammunition, what’s related to gun parts and what’s the manufactureres fault.

Highlights:

  • The importance of good magazines.
  • The importance of cleaning.
  • Dirty chambers.
  • Stovepiping.
  • Inspecting the feed lips of your magazines.
  • Failure to go into battery.
  • Recoil springs.
  • How to clear a jam.

Thanks for listening to the show.
