Shooting range discussion is the main topic of this show. As many of you know, I like to shoot the Real World Gun shooting match at Dallas Pistol Club. After the match, I interviewed 3 shooters who also listen to this show to get their opinions on the match and what they learned from it. We also discussed carry guns. One shooter, who is an avid USPSA shooter, kind of surprised me when we talked about his carry gun. I really stunk in this match. I had one stage that was horrible and it destroyed my score. But I was able to pull off a couple of real good shots that made the whole match worthwhile. As I’ve mentioned quite often, you just can’t practice some of this stuff at a square range. So this podcast should help you experience some of it. I also answer some listener questions and emails. Randy Harris, a.k.a. Cruel Hand Luke, is an instructor at Suarez International. In my opinion they are one of the best firearms training schools you can attend. I will take their Close Range Gunfighting Class this month. This show is based on an excellent article Randy wrote for Warrior Talk News (Gabe Suarez). Shooting techniques seldom practiced.  I realize it was only yesterday when I posted the last show, but this was fresh on my mind today and I wanted to communicate it.  I read an excellent post the other day and thought I would put my own touch on it.   In this show I talk about shooting skills I rarely see practiced at a range.  Self defense is not just standing there and plinking away at your targets at the range from 7 yards away.  It’s about shooting in unconventional positions and in various weather and lighting conditions.  Tune in.

Episode 46 – Combat XS Big Dot Sights and Point Shooting opinions

The XS handgun sight system does take a bit of time to get used to because it does not present  classic “square post in a square notch” sight picture offered by other sights. To line up XS sights, the shooter needs to place the large front dot in the center of the shallow V rear notch. When this is done correctly, the large white dot will sit on top of a white line in the center of the notch. XS calls this “dotting the ‘i.'”   Whichever visual representation you wish to use does not matter as long as the job gets done.

The 24/7 sight has the advantage of having a white front dot with a green tritium dot in the middle, and the rear white line has a green line in the center. I find the combination of the black, white and green sight easier to acquire than a plain white sight. At close range (15 yards and in) the front dot goes on top of where you want to shoot. At farther distances, rounds will hit at the top of the sight dot.
