This show is released early due to the large number of voice mails I’ve received from listeners. So I will be releasing the voice mail podcast next Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Podcast.

This episode was pre recorded almost 2 weeks ago. But since I’m taking a brief vacation from this show, I decided to make this episode 148, even though I made a mistake in the intro and called it episode 147.  Jon Hodoway joins me on this episode to discuss how to get ready for a MAG 40 class. Naturally we also discuss a few other topics as well such as IDPA. Next week will be another guest podcast (episode 149) done by a special guest, then I will be back in real time for Episode 150 and a lot of cool stuff planned for the future! Links for this episode will be on the Gun Rights Radio Network forum. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Well, I just couldn’t stay away from the airwaves until Oct 10th, and this is a special announcement, so I wanted to get it out to you now. In this episode Jon Hodoway of the Pro Arms Team, announces the MAG 40 class (Massad Ayoob Group) he’s sponsoring and The HandgunWorld Show is helping him with the promotion. There are a few surprises in this episode too. Links to the class sign up will be on the GRRN forum. The audio quality of this interview didn’t turn out as good as I hoped it would. I’m not sure what I did, but my microphone settings were all messed up, so I’ve done the best I could to make this interview with Jon Payne from Suarez International, sound good enough for you to get something out of it. My apologies in advance. This episode begins with an audio comment from a listener regarding my last episode, then a little commentary from me and then the interview regarding Advanced Close Range Gunfighing. I just finished the Gun Rights Policy Conference in Chicago and it was great! Later this week, I will post another episode with some good quality audio from the GRPC conference. I interviewed some listeners and some other podcasters. So download that on Friday of this week. For now, enjoy this show as much as you can. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show

Jon Payne and Don Robison are the 2 instructors and they join me for this quick but informative interview covering aspects of defending yourself with an AR-15/M-4 Rifle. I did a 3 way Skype call with Steve Zopfi and Rick Breneman, hosts of the Power Factor Show. This turned into a roundtable discussion on everything from concealed carry to training, NRA certification and CCW laws. This conversation took a lot of interesting twists and turns. It’s fun when a planned conversation changes course a few times. This is un-edited, except for the trailer at the end. Steve even challenges me on a couple of issues, which I think was kind of cool. Rick talks a lot about his NRA certifications and the value of the NRA courses. Steve discusses the IPSC 101 training classes he does and in addition, we discussed how we feel about the training required for concealed carry permits. Very little discussion is on what happens in competition however. Thanks for listening and please remember that everyone who invests in version 2 of my Shooters Club Podcast gets a free raffle ticket, to win an admission to Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course on May 28,29th in Dallas. Winner will be announced May 16th. Click here to get signed up. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Gabe Suarez, founder and lead instructor of Suarez International joins me on this episode. His instructor for Close Range Gunfighting coming up in Dallas and instructor Jon Payne also joins me. We discussed how and why Gabe started his training school, the importance of magazine capacity, why 9mm, what CRG is all about, training mindset, dry fire practice, handgun fit, what “winning a gun fight means” and more. Gabe also shares a story about a man involved in a self defense shooting without enough ammo. Thanks to listeners who emailed in some neat questions, Gabe and Jon gave us a lot to think about in this episode. Thanks for downloading and listening and don’t forget to join the forum at the GRRN. Too much discussion takes place about guns and shooting equipment that really doesn’t matter too much. What I mean by that is that it doesn’t help your ability to shoot and defend yourself too much. My guest, Jon Hodoway, on this show really makes this point quite nicely. He also recently won the Central Florida Tactical Conference shooting match. He’s also a firearms trainer for the Massad Ayoob Group. Among other topics such as Glocks that sometimes jam, range rental guns, how to test a gun, and the Ron Avery drill, we spend quite a bit of time talking about the less than important stuff that internet ninja’s and internet commandos spend a lot of time on. You may find yourself asking the question, what should I really do to improve my defensive shooting skills? I think you will find that answer in this podcast. – Bob Mayne, Handgun World Show

Can you fight with your handgun? What I mean by that, is can you fight your way out of trouble if you’re attacked? I’m not advocating looking for a gunfight, please don’t assume that. What I am advocating is the training needed to fight your way out of trouble and stay alive. That’s really why we carry a gun, isn’t it? So this episode is interview number 2 with Jon Payne, staff instructor at Suarez International. We discuss the upcoming Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas on May 28th and 29th. in this interview, you’ll gain valuable insight to the “self defense” mindset and tactics even if you don’t attend this course. We will definine in more detail, getting off the X, dynamic movement, defending SUL, defensive tactics and a lot more. Please remember to join the GRRN forum or post a comment on this website if you have comments or questions. Also, version 2 of my “Shooter’s Club” premium podcast will be released in about a week (slightly late.) Click the “Shooter’s Club” link at the top of this website. There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

Jon Hodoway is my guest on this show. He agreed to be interviewed due to some challenges I had with some of his comments and quotes of me a few weeks ago. We had a very good civil discussion on concealed carry, caliber, choice of gun, training, stopping power and why he doesn’t like the .380acp! So download and listen as soon as you can. I found this to be very informative and while we don’t see eye to eye on everything, that’s a good thing. Jon does a good job of backing up his arguments and he makes some very convincing points. I like the fact that he used evidence that he’s found and not just pie in the sky theories. We also discussed some expensive 1911’s and a couple of revolvers.

Thanks for listening,

Bob Mayne

Good feedback and comments sent to me lately, so I start with some of my own comments and thank you’s. For the main segment, part 2 of my interview with Steve Zopfi. Some of this is a repeat of Episode 93 but not all of it, I left some of it out of the last show, now it’s included in this show. Steve and I do our best not to make this just a competitive shooting episode. We tie it into self defense techniques also.

Highlights:

  • Review of grip and natural point of aim
  • Alignment
  • Performing reloads
  • Posture
  • Grip pressure
  • Shooter’s elbow
  • The importance of training (excellent video sent by a listener)
  • Situational awareness

Check out this video sent to me by a listener, it’s excellent. Also remember to join me at the GRRN forum.
