This episode is about single handed shooting and perfecting your shooting techniques. I also got around to answering a backlog of listener questions and feedback on Taurus guns, the importance of training and a lot more. This show was recorded long before the tragic shooting in Arizona. Next week I will have some comments about that and dedicate part of the show to that subject. Please join the forum at the Gun Rights Radio Network if you haven’t and don’t forget to comment on what you carry in your vehicle. I also recently put up a new video on my YouTube Channel. At the end of this month I will cut off sales of version one of my CD/Digital Download and begin recording version 2 which will be released near the end of February 2011. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne.

This episode is another interview with Steve Zopfi, USPSA Master class shooter. We discuss one handed shooting, shooting around barricades, stance and chapter 4 of Brian Enos’ book, “Practical shooting beyond fundamentals” and a lot more. This is part one of the interview. I will post part 2 later this week. Whether you’re trying to get better in competition or trying to improve your skills with your carry gun (like me) I’m confident you will get a lot out of this show. Let me say up front, we had some internet connection challenges so I had to do some editing to make this sound well, so if it’s kind of choppy please forgive me. If you have any comments or questions, please email them to me and Steve and I will answer them on the show. Also don’t forget about the GRRN forum if you haven’t already signed up. Thanks for downloading and listening.

On December 14, 2010 a tragic shooting took place during a Florida School Board meeting. Jon Hodoway and I discuss the events that took place and what it means to all of us who conceal or open carry on a daily basis. Jon did his homework on this event, reading transcripts and analyzing videos. I think you’ll find his conclusions and opinions quite compelling. Here are a few questions I would like to pose to you as you listen to this. First, this happened in a gun free zone, so have you ever wondered how dangerous gun free zones really are? Secondly, why do people not believe that something like this can never happen to them? Third, are you prepared? Please take this information to heart and really think about what’ being said in this show and thanks for downloading and enjoy the interview. By the way, if you want to support my show consider investing in the digital download or CD I’ve just released. It’s packed with good shooting skills information, interviews and audio clips, exclusive only to those who help support my show.

Now it’s time for some fun, humor and the 12 Guns of Christmas. I do have some serious things to say also, but because it’s Christmas and the end of the year, I figured it was time for some light hearted gun stuff. Please remember to check out the links to all of the audio clips you hear on this show. Please remember to carry during the Holidays. It seems like the bad guys are out in full force during this time of the year. Don’t be a statistic and utilize your rights under the 2nd Amendment. You will also hear a recording from someone who does a great job of explaining why we should conceal carry our gun. Most of all have fun, stay out of trouble and let’s talk Christmas Guns!

Please join the Gun Rights Radio Network and participate in the forum there, you’ll find me too. If you would like to support my show and keep it running, consider an investment in my Shooters Club CD or digital download. There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

Jon Hodoway is my guest on this show. He agreed to be interviewed due to some challenges I had with some of his comments and quotes of me a few weeks ago. We had a very good civil discussion on concealed carry, caliber, choice of gun, training, stopping power and why he doesn’t like the .380acp! So download and listen as soon as you can. I found this to be very informative and while we don’t see eye to eye on everything, that’s a good thing. Jon does a good job of backing up his arguments and he makes some very convincing points. I like the fact that he used evidence that he’s found and not just pie in the sky theories. We also discussed some expensive 1911’s and a couple of revolvers.

Thanks for listening,

Bob Mayne

Before and after analysis of the Real World Gun Match that’s more defensive oriented than most competition matches in my opinion. I realize it’s still a game, but I shot my carry gun and used my carry gear/holster, etc. This is a relatively short show but I think you’ll enjoy the analysis and shooting results. I also got a chance to shoot a Wilson Combat CQB 1911, so tune in for a quick review on that gun. This Friday I’ll post my recent interview with Jon Hodoway. Remember to join the GRRN forum if you’re not already and check out my Facebook Page, YouTube Videos and Shooters Legion page.

Also, if you haven’t ordered my CD or digital download yet, let me encourage you to do so. You’ll support my show but more importantly, Steve Zopfi and I share some very nice shooting skills advice from Brian Enos’ book. Most of this show is listener feedback but I also give a summary of The Real World Gun match I’ll be shooting this Thanksgiving weekend.  So stay tuned next week for the results of what happened. However, I do explain the differences between Real World Gun and IDPA. I also answer listener’s questions about holsters, throwing yogurt at vehicles, arm extension, carrying a Kahr, carrying a Taurus, tuckable holsters, practice techniques and more. Please remember to join me at the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum, YouTube, Facebook and Shooters Legion. Be thankful you live in an area where you can own and carry a gun to defend yourself (if you do) this Thanksgiving Holiday and have a great weekend!

Your draw from the holster is one of the most important skills to know to deploy your handgun for self defense. So is performing a reload. In this episode I get taught a new way of performing a reload. We also break down the 5 step reload into on of the best explanations I’ve ever heard in the audio version. I cover a little listener feedback in segment one. But have you ever stopped to concentrate on your draw stroke? Do yo practice it? Thousands of repetitions? When you reload do you look your magazine into the magwell or keep focused on the threat? What do you do with your gun to regain sight picture after a reload. The porpoise technique? Does your draw look like a bowling ball motion? Tune in, I think you’ll find this show educational no matter what your skill level. This show pertains to you while shooting competition OR self defense.

Who would have thought that Yogurt and Handguns would exist in the same news story? Well, they did, I’ll cover that in the show. I also discuss the possibility of concealed carry in Wisconsin and how the opposition to CCW in that state is putting out false and inaccurate information. It’s the same bogus argument most anti gun people use. I also do an assessment of the mid term election results and what they mean for our gun rights. You’ll also hear about some criticism of my show and my answer to it. This is a shorter show than usual and I normally don’t put these out on weekends, but I wanted to get this one out there as soon as possible.

Good feedback and comments sent to me lately, so I start with some of my own comments and thank you’s. For the main segment, part 2 of my interview with Steve Zopfi. Some of this is a repeat of Episode 93 but not all of it, I left some of it out of the last show, now it’s included in this show. Steve and I do our best not to make this just a competitive shooting episode. We tie it into self defense techniques also.

Highlights:

  • Review of grip and natural point of aim
  • Alignment
  • Performing reloads
  • Posture
  • Grip pressure
  • Shooter’s elbow
  • The importance of training (excellent video sent by a listener)
  • Situational awareness

Check out this video sent to me by a listener, it’s excellent. Also remember to join me at the GRRN forum.

Indoor IDPA is a different experience than outdoor matches. This episode is a recap of a match I shot last Thursday. I also answer a couple of listener questions about Mili-Tec lubricant and slide play on a Glock. Then I will give you a before and after summary of some stages. I made some mistakes, also achieved some victories. I shot left handed and discussed lots of well designed stages for an indoor match. Shooting on the move, weak hand only shooting, interchanged ammo and shooting a modified Glock 19 in ESP category are subjects I discussed in the “before” segment. Segment 2 is about the results and what happened. I got some malfunction clearance practice and I even shot a magazine of carry ammo on one stage! I’ll tell you all about it. You’ll also hear a preview of next week’s episode with Steve Zopfi again as we discuss Brian Enos’ book Practical Shooting Beyond Fundamentals.

Anatomy of Ending a Fight is important to know in case of the unfortunate event that occurs when you have to use your handgun. Please keep in mind, I do not in any way advocate killing or using lethal force unless it’s absolutely necessary. Please educate yourself on when to use deadly force. Courses by Massad Ayoob and Tom Givens are excellent resources on this topic. But if you do have to use your gun I hope you find some good basics as to how you can more likely stop your attackers. I’ll discuss things like CNS hits, RS hits, CS hits and effective stopping power techniques. Please read an excellent post on this too sent to me by a listener. Good stuff complete with a video! You’ll also hear why I really don’t think caliber is a big deal. Big and slow vs. small and fast, it really doesn’t matter, in my opinion. What matters more is how effectively you can react and place your shots and where you place them.

Eric Shelton from the Handgun Podcast joins me this week to discuss our podcasts, how they came about, why we do this and how we are similar, yet different in a few ways. We discuss ideas about concealed carry guns, holster, sights, lights on guns, revolvers, sights, trigger pulls and more. We agree on some things and differ on others but I have to let you know that Eric’s show has certainly been an inspiration to me and one of the influences that made me start this podcast. Eric and I also discuss why we like to carry a Glock 19 and how I started shooting 1911’s in IDPA. For those of you that don’t know, Eric’s show is also part of the Gun Rights Radio Network. Last Friday I was on his podcast, so you may want to listen to that first, because this is sort of a “Part 2” of that episode. Both interviews were recorded at the same time.
