A lot of people think they need to make serious modifications to their gun to be able to shoot it well. A couple weeks ago, a shooting buddy of mine decided to pour about $600 worth of upgrades into his new Glock 21SF, then did a range test to see if he could shoot it better. Listen to this episode to find out the results. Are modifications really worth it? Is there a point of diminishing returns? Would you be better off to spend that same money on ammo and training? Do you need a trigger job? What is the 1,000 round trigger job? These are questions I attempt to answer in my own way on this show. You’ll also hear a brief post match discussion between me and Steve and Rick from the Powerfactor Show. For those of you who have emailed me questions and comments, I’ve also handled some of the backlog of emails I’ve received. Thanks for sending them in. A little over a week ago I competed at the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls, TX. Although I didn’t do as well as I wanted, I’m glad I took on the challenge. Competition does help you improve your ability to shoot fast and accurately. Why would that be a bad thing? So in this episode, I interviewed people at the range who were shooting with me and also recorded some of the stage descriptions given by the RO’s of the match. Also, Steve Zopfi and Rick Brenneman from the PowerFactor Show joined me for a discussion after day one as to what we liked, disliked and some success and failure stories. This episode is as close to being as I can bring you in an audio podcast. I think you’ll enjoy it. Thanks for downloading and listening. Links are posted on the GRRN forum. This week, Steve and Rick from the Powerfactor Show talk with me about getting ready for the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls Texas next weekend. So naturally this episode is about competition shooting. We discuss what guns we are shooting, what spare parts we are bringing, what courses of fire to expect, they type of holsters we will be using, what divisions and classifications we are shooting in and what shooters we expect to see and interact with at the match. I just finished the 2 Day “Close Range Gunfighting” course with Suarez International this past weekend and it was great. So tune in next weekend and I will bring you interviews from shooters at the course and a recap of the course. Then, the following week, you’ll hear Steve and Rick and probably a few other shooters from Double Tap range talk about what happened at the match. For now, enjoy the preview of the competition. This week I address the long backlog of listener feedback and questions. Some of the topics are the 1,000 round trigger job, IDPA, gun ownership and mental health issues, Glock triggers, magazine capacity, training and even a few disagreements with some of the points made on a few of my recent shows. I think that’s a good thing because there are a lot of ways to defend yourself with a handgun and differences of opinion are healthy. This was recorded about a week in advance so if you’ve sent me a questions or comment within the last week, I will get to it on next week’s show. Thanks for your comments! Please feel free to join the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and make more comments there if you wish. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

I did a 3 way Skype call with Steve Zopfi and Rick Breneman, hosts of the Power Factor Show. This turned into a roundtable discussion on everything from concealed carry to training, NRA certification and CCW laws. This conversation took a lot of interesting twists and turns. It’s fun when a planned conversation changes course a few times. This is un-edited, except for the trailer at the end. Steve even challenges me on a couple of issues, which I think was kind of cool. Rick talks a lot about his NRA certifications and the value of the NRA courses. Steve discusses the IPSC 101 training classes he does and in addition, we discussed how we feel about the training required for concealed carry permits. Very little discussion is on what happens in competition however. Thanks for listening and please remember that everyone who invests in version 2 of my Shooters Club Podcast gets a free raffle ticket, to win an admission to Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course on May 28,29th in Dallas. Winner will be announced May 16th. Click here to get signed up. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Shooting range discussion is the main topic of this show. As many of you know, I like to shoot the Real World Gun shooting match at Dallas Pistol Club. After the match, I interviewed 3 shooters who also listen to this show to get their opinions on the match and what they learned from it. We also discussed carry guns. One shooter, who is an avid USPSA shooter, kind of surprised me when we talked about his carry gun. I really stunk in this match. I had one stage that was horrible and it destroyed my score. But I was able to pull off a couple of real good shots that made the whole match worthwhile. As I’ve mentioned quite often, you just can’t practice some of this stuff at a square range. So this podcast should help you experience some of it. I also answer some listener questions and emails. Next week I will do a review of the High Noon Alter Ego and the High Noon Hideaway holsters I’ve been using lately. Don’t forget to join the GRRN forum and my YouTube Channel too. Old guns are fun to talk about and also fun to shoot. Not only are they pieces of history, but many old guns are well made. In this show, I interview Rick Breneman again, he’s one of the hosts of the Power Factor Show on GRRN. He’s an accumulator and shooter of old, historic firearms. So this is sort of a Part 2 of the interview from a few weeks ago. We cover some more information on shooting, reloading and collecting old guns. We discuss military surplus rifles, old 1911’s and shooting them. We also get a little off topic and talk about the .357SIG. Will it be obscure in the future? Then we tie it in to shooting old guns in competition and carrying them for self defense. There are actually 2 interviews in this show, the 2nd one is regarding classification in IDPA and USPSA, with Steve Zopfi of the Power Factor Show. Please remember to join me at the GRRN Forum and also consider an investment in version one of my CD/Digital download. Version 2 will be available in about 2 weeks. 50% of proceeds benefit the Second Amendment Foundation. Thanks for listening.

Shooting events such as IDPA and USPSA are fun games, but I’ve always believed they can help you practice gun handling skills such as drawing from your holster, grip, alignment, stance and shooting on the move. So once a month I interview Steve Zopfi. He’s one of the hosts of the PowerFactor Show, a video podcast on competition shooting. In this episode we discuss Chapter 5 of Brian Enos’ book, “Practical Shooting, Beyond Fundamentals.” We do our best to tie this into self defense skills as well. In this episode you will gain some valuable insight into the world of competition shooting no matter what gun you are using. I also answer some listener questions in the beginning of the show. Please remember to join the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and also, from now until March 15, 2011, I am donating 50% of the proceeds from my Shooters Club CD/Download to the Second Amendment Foundation! Thanks for listening and safe shooting!

2 fellow shooters joined me at the shooting range recently and we talked afterwards. One is from Serbia and the other is from Southern California. Both now live in the gun friendly state of Texas. You will hear their perspective of what happened at the Real World Gun match at Dallas pistol club and how it has helped them improve their shooting skills and self defense gun handling techniques. I also cover some more listener feedback. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for a new shooter to get started I think you will enjoy this show. They shot their carry guns and give listeners a unique perspective on what that’s like too. More discussion on rental guns. After going to the range with James Kimmerle, I did an interview with him. We discussed our thoughts about a Glock .357Sig, FN 9mm and Beretta PX4 sub compact 9mm. At the beginning of the show I cover some information on a recent back up gun match I shot with my P380. We also discussed James’ new High Noon Public Secret left handed holster for his PX4. We also spent some time discussing the Tucson shooting and why the anti gunners and media have it all wrong. I also make an announcement about a new fund raising effort for the 2nd Amendment foundation. There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

Before and after analysis of the Real World Gun Match that’s more defensive oriented than most competition matches in my opinion. I realize it’s still a game, but I shot my carry gun and used my carry gear/holster, etc. This is a relatively short show but I think you’ll enjoy the analysis and shooting results. I also got a chance to shoot a Wilson Combat CQB 1911, so tune in for a quick review on that gun. This Friday I’ll post my recent interview with Jon Hodoway. Remember to join the GRRN forum if you’re not already and check out my Facebook Page, YouTube Videos and Shooters Legion page.

Also, if you haven’t ordered my CD or digital download yet, let me encourage you to do so. Shooter attitude is from Brian Enos’ book “Practical Shooting, Beyond Fundamentals.” In this show I interview Steve Zopfi again. He’s a master class USPSA shooter. We discuss chapter one of this book on awareness, focus, shooting tense, dry fire practice and seeing things with your subconscious mind. We also tie this into self defense techniques. This is the 2nd podcast this week. Normally I post one a week, but I had a lot to say this week so this is a bonus show. We also discussed some shooting practice techniques you can do at home and on the range. Even though this is primarily geared towards competition shooting I’m convinced you’ll find some ideas on how you can become better at self defense with a handgun. Please join me at the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum for more discussion if you wish.
