Jon Hodoway joins me on this episode to discuss mindset of concealed carry. He also shares a recent experience he had where mindset paid off. He was carrying but it had a good ending. We also got into good discussion on how to select a firearms trainer. Jon is a firearms trainer for the Pro Arms team and usually has some very valuable insights. This show is no exception. He’s a traveller like me and travels with his handguns. He shares a story about what happened to him on the road. Also, Un-named Trucker submitted a review of the Galco King Tuk holster. Please remember to join the forums at the Gun Rights Radio Network and my Shooter’ Club Podcast. Links for this episode can be found on the HandgunWorld Show section on the GRRN forum. In this episode I also announce 5 giveaways for those who support my show. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

This week I address the long backlog of listener feedback and questions. Some of the topics are the 1,000 round trigger job, IDPA, gun ownership and mental health issues, Glock triggers, magazine capacity, training and even a few disagreements with some of the points made on a few of my recent shows. I think that’s a good thing because there are a lot of ways to defend yourself with a handgun and differences of opinion are healthy. This was recorded about a week in advance so if you’ve sent me a questions or comment within the last week, I will get to it on next week’s show. Thanks for your comments! Please feel free to join the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and make more comments there if you wish. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

This episode starts with a review of the Taurus PT 24/7 DS, 9mm that a listener let me borrow for T&E. Overall, I give this gun high marks. There were some features I didn’t like, but I have to say that this is a very reasonably priced gun that gives you a lot of features and it was very reliable. But I give you my usual unbiased review after shooting over 100 rounds through it. The second half of the show is dedicated to listener emails and questions. I also pick on IDPA a little bit even though I love the sport. This is the last week to take advantage of the drawing for a free admission to the CRG Suarez International Class in Dallas this month. Just invest in my Shooters Club Podcast and I’ll email you your ticket number this weekend. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show

Al Vennemeyer, owner of Stealth Defense Strut Holsters, Inc., joins me as my guest. We discuss his new holster design and why he feels it solves some problems that concealed carry sometimes presents. He sent me one for T&E, so I will carry it for a few weeks and let you know what I think. Also, I shot an IDPA match at Cross Timbers IDPA recently and shot quite well, but made a critical error. It didn’t cost me much but it could have. So the first segment I recap that particular stage for you. I’ve also included some responses to listeners questions and emails in segment 3. Shooting events such as IDPA and USPSA are fun games, but I’ve always believed they can help you practice gun handling skills such as drawing from your holster, grip, alignment, stance and shooting on the move. So once a month I interview Steve Zopfi. He’s one of the hosts of the PowerFactor Show, a video podcast on competition shooting. In this episode we discuss Chapter 5 of Brian Enos’ book, “Practical Shooting, Beyond Fundamentals.” We do our best to tie this into self defense skills as well. In this episode you will gain some valuable insight into the world of competition shooting no matter what gun you are using. I also answer some listener questions in the beginning of the show. Please remember to join the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and also, from now until March 15, 2011, I am donating 50% of the proceeds from my Shooters Club CD/Download to the Second Amendment Foundation! Thanks for listening and safe shooting!

2 fellow shooters joined me at the shooting range recently and we talked afterwards. One is from Serbia and the other is from Southern California. Both now live in the gun friendly state of Texas. You will hear their perspective of what happened at the Real World Gun match at Dallas pistol club and how it has helped them improve their shooting skills and self defense gun handling techniques. I also cover some more listener feedback. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for a new shooter to get started I think you will enjoy this show. They shot their carry guns and give listeners a unique perspective on what that’s like too. More discussion on rental guns. After going to the range with James Kimmerle, I did an interview with him. We discussed our thoughts about a Glock .357Sig, FN 9mm and Beretta PX4 sub compact 9mm. At the beginning of the show I cover some information on a recent back up gun match I shot with my P380. We also discussed James’ new High Noon Public Secret left handed holster for his PX4. We also spent some time discussing the Tucson shooting and why the anti gunners and media have it all wrong. I also make an announcement about a new fund raising effort for the 2nd Amendment foundation. This episode is another interview with Steve Zopfi, USPSA Master class shooter. We discuss one handed shooting, shooting around barricades, stance and chapter 4 of Brian Enos’ book, “Practical shooting beyond fundamentals” and a lot more. This is part one of the interview. I will post part 2 later this week. Whether you’re trying to get better in competition or trying to improve your skills with your carry gun (like me) I’m confident you will get a lot out of this show. Let me say up front, we had some internet connection challenges so I had to do some editing to make this sound well, so if it’s kind of choppy please forgive me. If you have any comments or questions, please email them to me and Steve and I will answer them on the show. Also don’t forget about the GRRN forum if you haven’t already signed up. There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

Your draw from the holster is one of the most important skills to know to deploy your handgun for self defense. So is performing a reload. In this episode I get taught a new way of performing a reload. We also break down the 5 step reload into on of the best explanations I’ve ever heard in the audio version. I cover a little listener feedback in segment one. But have you ever stopped to concentrate on your draw stroke? Do yo practice it? Thousands of repetitions? When you reload do you look your magazine into the magwell or keep focused on the threat? What do you do with your gun to regain sight picture after a reload. The porpoise technique? Does your draw look like a bowling ball motion? Tune in, I think you’ll find this show educational no matter what your skill level. This show pertains to you while shooting competition OR self defense.

Good feedback and comments sent to me lately, so I start with some of my own comments and thank you’s. For the main segment, part 2 of my interview with Steve Zopfi. Some of this is a repeat of Episode 93 but not all of it, I left some of it out of the last show, now it’s included in this show. Steve and I do our best not to make this just a competitive shooting episode. We tie it into self defense techniques also.

Highlights:

  • Review of grip and natural point of aim
  • Alignment
  • Performing reloads
  • Posture
  • Grip pressure
  • Shooter’s elbow
  • The importance of training (excellent video sent by a listener)
  • Situational awareness

Check out this video sent to me by a listener, it’s excellent. Also remember to join me at the GRRN forum.

Indoor IDPA is a different experience than outdoor matches. This episode is a recap of a match I shot last Thursday. I also answer a couple of listener questions about Mili-Tec lubricant and slide play on a Glock. Then I will give you a before and after summary of some stages. I made some mistakes, also achieved some victories. I shot left handed and discussed lots of well designed stages for an indoor match. Shooting on the move, weak hand only shooting, interchanged ammo and shooting a modified Glock 19 in ESP category are subjects I discussed in the “before” segment. Segment 2 is about the results and what happened. I got some malfunction clearance practice and I even shot a magazine of carry ammo on one stage! I’ll tell you all about it. You’ll also hear a preview of next week’s episode with Steve Zopfi again as we discuss Brian Enos’ book Practical Shooting Beyond Fundamentals.

Eric Shelton from the Handgun Podcast joins me this week to discuss our podcasts, how they came about, why we do this and how we are similar, yet different in a few ways. We discuss ideas about concealed carry guns, holster, sights, lights on guns, revolvers, sights, trigger pulls and more. We agree on some things and differ on others but I have to let you know that Eric’s show has certainly been an inspiration to me and one of the influences that made me start this podcast. Eric and I also discuss why we like to carry a Glock 19 and how I started shooting 1911’s in IDPA. For those of you that don’t know, Eric’s show is also part of the Gun Rights Radio Network. Last Friday I was on his podcast, so you may want to listen to that first, because this is sort of a “Part 2” of that episode. Both interviews were recorded at the same time.

Listener feedback and comments are the topics this week. I’ve received a lot of emails and first let me say thank you! In this show I talk about a mixed bag of gun talk again, why I have 3 CCW licenses, Springfield XDM’s, Revolvers and some corrections to my revolver episode, open carry in Wisconsin, ammo recoil, self training with a handgun, gun free zones, IDPA and more. I’ll even discuss a listener’s email as to why he carries, it’s a good story, you’ll want to hear it. They are all in response to you, the loyal listener. Please remember to join me at the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. I also cover some constructive criticism and compliments. I appreciate the feedback because it helps me improve the show.
