There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

Jon Hodoway is my guest on this show. He agreed to be interviewed due to some challenges I had with some of his comments and quotes of me a few weeks ago. We had a very good civil discussion on concealed carry, caliber, choice of gun, training, stopping power and why he doesn’t like the .380acp! So download and listen as soon as you can. I found this to be very informative and while we don’t see eye to eye on everything, that’s a good thing. Jon does a good job of backing up his arguments and he makes some very convincing points. I like the fact that he used evidence that he’s found and not just pie in the sky theories. We also discussed some expensive 1911’s and a couple of revolvers.

Thanks for listening,

Bob Mayne

Before and after analysis of the Real World Gun Match that’s more defensive oriented than most competition matches in my opinion. I realize it’s still a game, but I shot my carry gun and used my carry gear/holster, etc. This is a relatively short show but I think you’ll enjoy the analysis and shooting results. I also got a chance to shoot a Wilson Combat CQB 1911, so tune in for a quick review on that gun. This Friday I’ll post my recent interview with Jon Hodoway. Remember to join the GRRN forum if you’re not already and check out my Facebook Page, YouTube Videos and Shooters Legion page.

Also, if you haven’t ordered my CD or digital download yet, let me encourage you to do so. You’ll support my show but more importantly, Steve Zopfi and I share some very nice shooting skills advice from Brian Enos’ book. Your draw from the holster is one of the most important skills to know to deploy your handgun for self defense. So is performing a reload. In this episode I get taught a new way of performing a reload. We also break down the 5 step reload into on of the best explanations I’ve ever heard in the audio version. I cover a little listener feedback in segment one. But have you ever stopped to concentrate on your draw stroke? Do yo practice it? Thousands of repetitions? When you reload do you look your magazine into the magwell or keep focused on the threat? What do you do with your gun to regain sight picture after a reload. The porpoise technique? Does your draw look like a bowling ball motion? Tune in, I think you’ll find this show educational no matter what your skill level. This show pertains to you while shooting competition OR self defense.

Indoor IDPA is a different experience than outdoor matches. This episode is a recap of a match I shot last Thursday. I also answer a couple of listener questions about Mili-Tec lubricant and slide play on a Glock. Then I will give you a before and after summary of some stages. I made some mistakes, also achieved some victories. I shot left handed and discussed lots of well designed stages for an indoor match. Shooting on the move, weak hand only shooting, interchanged ammo and shooting a modified Glock 19 in ESP category are subjects I discussed in the “before” segment. Segment 2 is about the results and what happened. I got some malfunction clearance practice and I even shot a magazine of carry ammo on one stage! I’ll tell you all about it. You’ll also hear a preview of next week’s episode with Steve Zopfi again as we discuss Brian Enos’ book Practical Shooting Beyond Fundamentals.

Listener feedback and comments are the topics this week. I’ve received a lot of emails and first let me say thank you! In this show I talk about a mixed bag of gun talk again, why I have 3 CCW licenses, Springfield XDM’s, Revolvers and some corrections to my revolver episode, open carry in Wisconsin, ammo recoil, self training with a handgun, gun free zones, IDPA and more. I’ll even discuss a listener’s email as to why he carries, it’s a good story, you’ll want to hear it. They are all in response to you, the loyal listener. Please remember to join me at the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. I also cover some constructive criticism and compliments. I appreciate the feedback because it helps me improve the show. Shooter attitude is from Brian Enos’ book “Practical Shooting, Beyond Fundamentals.” In this show I interview Steve Zopfi again. He’s a master class USPSA shooter. We discuss chapter one of this book on awareness, focus, shooting tense, dry fire practice and seeing things with your subconscious mind. We also tie this into self defense techniques. This is the 2nd podcast this week. Normally I post one a week, but I had a lot to say this week so this is a bonus show. We also discussed some shooting practice techniques you can do at home and on the range. Even though this is primarily geared towards competition shooting I’m convinced you’ll find some ideas on how you can become better at self defense with a handgun. Please join me at the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum for more discussion if you wish.

Calling your shots is an advanced shooting skill. On this show, I bring back Steve Z again for another interview. He was on episode 79 if you recall. We talk about “calling your shots.” I have to admit, I’m still not sure if I do it, or how to do it, but if you really want to be good at competitive shooting and in my opinion, defensive shooting, I think it would be good for you to get to the level of being able to call your shots. We also talk about Brian Enos’ book, Practical Shooting, Beyond Fundamentals and forum. In the first segment I share some more listener feedback that continues to roll in. Day two reviewed. More good stuff including getting off the X and working a flashlight into the fight. Several different ways to use the light, not a rail mounted light, a handheld flashlight. Faking my position with the way I hold the light that was fun. Then we worked a lot on 180 degree threats! In other words, shooting 3 bad guys in front of me, then doing an after action assessment, then check 360 (SUL) then advancing toward the bad guys behind me and shooting them. Had to do a slide lock reload (emergency reload) while constantly moving because there was no cover. Also more shooting inside 10 yards without using sights! After this course sights are not so important to me anymore. We also did some IDPA style shooting, started by shooting on the move then take cover switch to left hand shooting from one side then right hand shooting from the other side then 3 more bad guys on move. Absolutely good training that you simply can’t get anywhere else. Glenn Matthews is a good instructor. About 250 rounds shot on day two. I will take their FoF class next spring. I got some good interviews while I was there, listen in and enjoy.

I also cover an email from a listener about gun laws in Puerto Rico.

Analyzing practical shooting down to every detail is what Steven Zopfi and I attempt to do here. He’s been a longtime shooter (18 years) and is an IPSC Master Class shooter. He also has listened to this show for quite some time and has some real good insights on how to shoot effectively. You will really enjoy this interview and especially if you are involved in the shooting sports like IDPA, USPSA.

Highlights:

  • Seeing what you need to see.
  • Shooting with both eyes open?
  • The one year Glock 19 experiment.
  • Transitioning from Glocks to 1911’s and back and forth.
  • Trigger control
  • Transitioning.
  • Brian Enos’ Forum.
  • A story about when Steve shot against Rob Leatham.
  • Tangfolio’s new production division pistol.
  • Trigger jobs.
  • The subconscious level of practical shooting.
  • How competition shooting applies to self defense.
  • Dry fire practicing.
  • Working a flashlight while shooting.
  • Syringe method.

Tune in again later this week, I will recap my experience at Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighing Class. Remember the Freedom Raffle, time is running out! Join the Gun Rights Radio Forum and check out my newest YouTube Video.

Randy Harris, a.k.a. Cruel Hand Luke, is an instructor at Suarez International. In my opinion they are one of the best firearms training schools you can attend. I will take their Close Range Gunfighting Class this month. This show is based on an excellent article Randy wrote for Warrior Talk News (Gabe Suarez). I put my own flavor on it and relate some personal experience as I take you through the combination of point shooting and sighted shooting of a defensive handgun.

Highlights:

  • Point Shooting vs. Sighted Shooting.
  • Distance determines your sight use.
  • What if the target picture is bigger than your gun?
  • Imprinting your drawstroke into your muscle memory.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and run the gun in your peripheral vision.

Drawing your pistol and the freedoms of self preservation and self defense are the subjects of this show.  Can you draw your gun quickly and get into the fight?  Have you ever thought about just why you need to carry a gun and the responsibility that carries?  In this podcast, tune in and I’ll talk about why we as people shouldn’t technically even need a license to carry a weapon and how that infringes upon our God Given right.

In segment 2, it’s all about how to practice your draw stroke and a few tips when dry firing too.
