The Gun Control subject is a touchy one. So many opinions. But one fact is clear, the 2nd amendment is an individual right and that has now been upheld by the SCOTUS. But in this episode I have a little fun with the gun control discussion. So there’s a little humor in this show and also some serious discussion. I found some good audio soundbites of some well known people and some anonymous people on the subject of Gun Control. Some news interviews too. I think you’ll enjoy them. Modifying your handgun is something almost every handgun owner decides to do. Many experts in the field of self defense and the legalities of doing so, recommend not modifying your carry gun. Especially the trigger. Sights are the most common modification. Whether you have a 1911 or a polymer wonder, or a SIG, Beretta, Taurus or whatever, it seems as though there’s so much talk and decision making that goes into the modification of one’s handgun. Even revolver shooters tend to favor trigger jobs. In this episode I start with responding to a few listener emails, then get into an interview with Steve Zopfi about trigger modifications. We don’t talk much about competition shooting, mostly we discussed modifying carry guns. He discusses his STI and his Glock. So thanks for downloading and listening and links can be found at the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show

Jon Hodoway joins me on this episode to discuss mindset of concealed carry. He also shares a recent experience he had where mindset paid off. He was carrying but it had a good ending. We also got into good discussion on how to select a firearms trainer. Jon is a firearms trainer for the Pro Arms team and usually has some very valuable insights. This show is no exception. He’s a traveller like me and travels with his handguns. He shares a story about what happened to him on the road. Also, Un-named Trucker submitted a review of the Galco King Tuk holster. Please remember to join the forums at the Gun Rights Radio Network and my Shooter’ Club Podcast. Links for this episode can be found on the HandgunWorld Show section on the GRRN forum. A little over a week ago I took Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas. Many listeners were there to train with me. It was intense and taught us about the defensive mindset and how to safely and efficiently use our gun to stop the situation if it ever got to that point. So I decided to record a little bit of what happened at the course. I interviewed other students and also had a chance to record our instructor discuss the significant points of the class. Short of actually being there, this recording should help you share the experience. Please try to get to one of these classes. I think it’s a wise investment if you carry a gun and plan to use it as a defensive tool. We cover after action assessments, SUL, shooting with both hands and a lot more. Thanks for listening. I will post links related to this show on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. Thanks for listening. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

This week I address the long backlog of listener feedback and questions. Some of the topics are the 1,000 round trigger job, IDPA, gun ownership and mental health issues, Glock triggers, magazine capacity, training and even a few disagreements with some of the points made on a few of my recent shows. I think that’s a good thing because there are a lot of ways to defend yourself with a handgun and differences of opinion are healthy. This was recorded about a week in advance so if you’ve sent me a questions or comment within the last week, I will get to it on next week’s show. Thanks for your comments! Please feel free to join the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and make more comments there if you wish. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Last week I took a trip to Montreal, Canada for the entire week on business. Therefore I was not able to carry my gun. It gave me a feeling of being naked, without it. Once concealed carry becomes a habit and part of your wardrobe and your lifestyle, have you ever noticed that if you don’t carry your gun, you get the feeling that something is missing? I did, so I decided to make that the main topic of this episode. Once carrying a gun becomes second nature, you’ll probably notice this. Also, aren’t there times when one needs to downsize their firearm, depending on their activity and mode of dress required? I think the answer is yes. So you won’t feel naked because you’re not carrying a gun. Some experts say “dress around your gun” which is fine in theory, but there are times when that’s just not possible, so I discuss that too. Remember to check out the Gun Rights Radio Network forum to find out the winner of the free ticket to Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas on May 28th and 29th and the High Noon holsters I’m giving away. Al Vennemeyer, owner of Stealth Defense Strut Holsters, Inc., joins me as my guest. We discuss his new holster design and why he feels it solves some problems that concealed carry sometimes presents. He sent me one for T&E, so I will carry it for a few weeks and let you know what I think. Also, I shot an IDPA match at Cross Timbers IDPA recently and shot quite well, but made a critical error. It didn’t cost me much but it could have. So the first segment I recap that particular stage for you. I’ve also included some responses to listeners questions and emails in segment 3. Too much discussion takes place about guns and shooting equipment that really doesn’t matter too much. What I mean by that is that it doesn’t help your ability to shoot and defend yourself too much. My guest, Jon Hodoway, on this show really makes this point quite nicely. He also recently won the Central Florida Tactical Conference shooting match. He’s also a firearms trainer for the Massad Ayoob Group. Among other topics such as Glocks that sometimes jam, range rental guns, how to test a gun, and the Ron Avery drill, we spend quite a bit of time talking about the less than important stuff that internet ninja’s and internet commandos spend a lot of time on. You may find yourself asking the question, what should I really do to improve my defensive shooting skills? I think you will find that answer in this podcast. – Bob Mayne, Handgun World Show

Can you fight with your handgun? What I mean by that, is can you fight your way out of trouble if you’re attacked? I’m not advocating looking for a gunfight, please don’t assume that. What I am advocating is the training needed to fight your way out of trouble and stay alive. That’s really why we carry a gun, isn’t it? So this episode is interview number 2 with Jon Payne, staff instructor at Suarez International. We discuss the upcoming Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas on May 28th and 29th. in this interview, you’ll gain valuable insight to the “self defense” mindset and tactics even if you don’t attend this course. We will definine in more detail, getting off the X, dynamic movement, defending SUL, defensive tactics and a lot more. This is a sequel to the Women and Guns podcast I did last year. But I felt compelled to put out more information on this subject because I feel strongly about women carry a gun for self protection. So, I interviewed a woman who is a firearms trainer, excellent shooter and big advocate for a woman’s right to defend herself with a firearm. Guy, pay attention to this episode if you have a woman in your life that is interested in concealed carry and shooting. If she’s thinking about what type of firearm to buy, this will be a good episode for her to listen to. Andrea Clark’s website is called F.A.S.T. Defense (Firearms, Awareness and Safety training.) I also answer some listener questions in this episode. Please remember to join the GRRN forum if you haven’t already. Also, version 2 of my “Shooter’s Club” Exclusive Podcast will be releasing on March 15th. Check the website at HandgunWorld.com for details and subject matter. On December 14, 2010 a tragic shooting took place during a Florida School Board meeting. Jon Hodoway and I discuss the events that took place and what it means to all of us who conceal or open carry on a daily basis. Jon did his homework on this event, reading transcripts and analyzing videos. I think you’ll find his conclusions and opinions quite compelling. Here are a few questions I would like to pose to you as you listen to this. First, this happened in a gun free zone, so have you ever wondered how dangerous gun free zones really are? Secondly, why do people not believe that something like this can never happen to them? Third, are you prepared? Please take this information to heart and really think about what’ being said in this show and thanks for downloading and enjoy the interview. By the way, if you want to support my show consider investing in the digital download or CD I’ve just released. There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.
