John Neuser works in an ER at a level 1 trauma center and he’s also a certified wilderness first responder. Quite frequently he sees people come into his ER with gunshot wounds. So I asked him to interview with me and discuss the effect that different bullets, calibers and bullet weights can have in a self defense situation. We also briefly discussed our favorite types of ammo and over penetration. You’ll enjoy this practical and useful interview. This episode also begins with a voice mail from a listener regarding fighting back against gun control and a couple of emails from listeners. One listener shared an excellent personal defense story!

Recently I had the chance to receive some sample holsters from High Noon Holsters. They sent them to me for review. After nearly a month of using them, I have decided to share my thoughts. They are excellent holsters. If you’re looking for a good leather holster you really need to give High Noon Holsters strong consideration. I will discuss things like ruff side out, sight tracks, reverse J Clips, reinforced mouths and the excellent High Noon belt for concealed carry. Many thanks to Alex at High Noon Holsters for giving me this opportunity. A follow up YouTube video will be coming shortly so I can put into pictures what I say on this show. I carried my Glock 19 and my Kahr PM9 for nearly a month in these holsters. One was the Alter Ego and the other was the Hideaway. I carried them appendix carry and even shot IDPA with the Alter Ego carried behind the hip. Listen carefully and you will hear my thoughts. Next week, Gabe Suarez will be one of my guests. If you have questions you would like me to ask him, please email them to me by this Friday, 15th. I’m also making another special announcement on this show, so thanks for listening. There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

Listener feedback and comments are the topics this week. I’ve received a lot of emails and first let me say thank you! In this show I talk about a mixed bag of gun talk again, why I have 3 CCW licenses, Springfield XDM’s, Revolvers and some corrections to my revolver episode, open carry in Wisconsin, ammo recoil, self training with a handgun, gun free zones, IDPA and more. I’ll even discuss a listener’s email as to why he carries, it’s a good story, you’ll want to hear it. They are all in response to you, the loyal listener. Can you carry a big gun? Why not? If so, why do you carry a large gun? Questions often asked, so I give you my answers. First I start with a review of the .357SIG, after I went to the range and shot a Glock 33. The Pro Arms Podcast recent review of the .357SIG got me interested in what all the fuss was about. I must say, I was quite impressed. Then I talk about an IDPA experience and a little bit of news and listener feedback. The main topic is carrying a big gun and why you should do it.

Highlights:

  • .357SIG Glock 33 review.
  • Using caliber conversion barrels in .40 cal and .357sig guns.
  • Using the wrong recoil spring in Glock 19.
  • What happens when you clean 2 guns at the same time.
  • IDPA match recap.
  • Big Slims Firearms store controversy.
  • How the right belt and holster help you comfortably carry a big gun.
  • Compromises in concealed carry and why I think you shouldn’t make too many of them.
  • The case for carrying a high capacity weapon.

A mixed bag of gun talk is all I could think of to title this podcast. While driving I share some thoughts I have about pistol caliber carbines, sights, belts, holsters, ammo, 20 gauge shotguns, survival guns and more. This is a relatively short show, I’ve been pretty busy this week. Don’t forget to listen to the pistol caliber carbine podcast I did on my survival show. That was in favor of pistol caliber carbines, this show is a reason not to own one. You decide. I do talk about the great many benefits of the Marlin 1894c .357 magnum, buffalo bore ammo, Marlin Camp carbines and more. Don’t forget it’s down to the wire for the Freedom Raffle. It’s too late for you to mail the money but you can still use a debit or credit card. Drawing is this Friday Sept. 17th.  Thanks for supporting this show, The Gun Rights Radio Network and The Second Amendment Foundation! Full Auto Weapons, RBCD Ammo and Oklahoma SB 1685.  The is the first telephone interview on The Handgun World Show.  In this episode I called up a friend of mine who want’s his name to be anonymous, but we discuss the Oklahoma SB 1685 which would join 8 other states in making firearms that are manufactured in Oklahoma exempt from Federal regulation.  There are many differing opinions on this subject.  I try to bring forth all viewpoints as I can so that there is something for everyone on this show.  We also discussed RBCD ammo and fully automatic weapons and what is an assault rifle?

Selecting the right ammo to use in your handgun is a challenge.  As you’ve heard me mention, I like Corbon DPX, but there are many good loads out there.  A listener emailed me a question and asked me my opinion on using reloaded ammo, so this episode is partially dedicated to answer that question.  I also play an audio clip of Massad Ayoob on The Judicious Use of Force.  I thought it would be appropriate because the ammo discussion plays right into how careful you have to be when carrying a gun.

Before listening to this podcast, I suggest you go to my survival website and listen to Episode 48 – Don’t Talk to The Police.  It goes along with this message.

Highlights:

  • When should you use reloaded ammunition?
  • Does it help you or hurt you in self defense?
  • Is it legal?
  • What does using handloaded ammunition do to your gun’s warranty?
  • How ammo prices have persuaded many to reload.
  • Why I don’t recommend that you use reloaded ammo for self defense.
  • How vitally important it is that we know our responsibility and the gravity of carrying a gun for self defense.
  • What are the legal consequences of you using your gun?

Tactical reloads and ammo selection.  A listener recently sent me an email alerting me to the fact that many experts point out that tactical reloads can take too much time, require too many fine motor skills and could actually get you killed.  After reading the articles sent to me by Michael Bane and Ralph Mroz, PoliceOne Columnist I agree.  So I’ve put together this podcast as a continuation of Episode 32.  I also throw in some of my thoughts about selecting ammunition.

Highlights:

  • Game vs. reality debate.
  • Is the tactical reload a game technique or could it be used in a real gunfight?
  • Why I like the “speed reloads” instead.
  • What is reload with retention?
  • Are civilian gunfights decided by round count?
  • Can the tactical reload cause more malfunctions?
  • IDPA, game or reality?
  • Ammo selection, bullet design, ballistics.
  • FMJ ammo and over-penetration, is it overstated?
