Hoplophobia is the irrational, morbid fear of guns (coined by Col. Jeff Cooper, from the Greek “hoplites,” weapon). Hoplophobes are common and should never be involved in setting gun policies. Point out hoplophobic behavior when noticed, it is dangerous, sufferers deserve pity, and should seek treatment. When confronted, hoplophobes typically go into denial, a common characteristic of the affliction. Often helped by training, or by coaching at a range, a process known to psychiatry as “desensitization,” often useful in treating many phobias.

So this episode also includes some of my thoughts on Hoplophobes.

Recently Dick Metcalf, long time gun writer for Guns and Ammo Magazine was fired for his most recent column. I also received an iTunes comment that said I am hurting the 2nd amendment cause. So I decided to weigh in on both of these events. I also changed my mind on an issue that you will hear about in this episode. Several listeners also called in some very good voice mails.

Alan Houck, assistant manager and instructor at A Place To Shoot range is my guest on this episode. He’s also a Texas CHL instructor. I asked him to discuss the issues of printing, brandishing and properly concealing a handgun. We also discussed the issue of campus carry some more. He’s also a college student with a good perspective on that issue. The episode starts with some listener voice mails on subjects such as training, the Taurus TCP .380 pistol and even legalizing pot! This is a sequel to the Women and Guns podcast I did last year. But I felt compelled to put out more information on this subject because I feel strongly about women carry a gun for self protection. So, I interviewed a woman who is a firearms trainer, excellent shooter and big advocate for a woman’s right to defend herself with a firearm. Guy, pay attention to this episode if you have a woman in your life that is interested in concealed carry and shooting. If she’s thinking about what type of firearm to buy, this will be a good episode for her to listen to. Andrea Clark’s website is called F.A.S.T. Defense (Firearms, Awareness and Safety training.) I also answer some listener questions in this episode. Please remember to join the GRRN forum if you haven’t already. Also, version 2 of my “Shooter’s Club” Exclusive Podcast will be releasing on March 15th. Check the website at HandgunWorld.com for details and subject matter. Thanks for downloading andlistening and safe shooting.

Grip angle is talked about so much I couldn’t ignore it so here’s a show about my thoughts on whether your pistol’s grip angle makes a difference in your shooting. Obviously when grip angle is discussed, 99% of the time people compare Glocks to 1911’s.  So tune in for my thoughts on that.

Also…are video games firearms trainers?  Tune in, the answer may surprise you.

Highlights:

  • Are there 15 different styles of skillsaw handles?
  • Do we all have “fitted” lawn mowers handles?
  • What video games teach kids about shooting.
  • Audio soundbite by Lt. Col Dave Grossman.
