John Neuser works in an ER at a level 1 trauma center and he’s also a certified wilderness first responder. Quite frequently he sees people come into his ER with gunshot wounds. So I asked him to interview with me and discuss the effect that different bullets, calibers and bullet weights can have in a self defense situation. We also briefly discussed our favorite types of ammo and over penetration. You’ll enjoy this practical and useful interview. This episode also begins with a voice mail from a listener regarding fighting back against gun control and a couple of emails from listeners. One listener shared an excellent personal defense story!

RECORDED 24 HOURS AFTER THE SANDY HOOK SHOOTING: I decided to get the perspective of a law enforcement officer. Jon Payne is a law enforcement officer in Texas. We discussed the very tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting just 24 hours after it happened. You’ll hear our thoughts and also Jon discusses what it’s like to be a law enforcement officer being one of the first responders! Some topics include, “the complainant calls 911 first.” Not all bad guys are stupid and what are some of the causes of the horrible tragedy we’ve all had to deal with. Keep in mind, this was recorded ONLY 24 HOURS AFTER that senseless shooting.

On the way to MAG 40 recently I interviewed my friend Mark. He’s one of my shooting buddies and he also traveled with me and trained with me. He used to be anti gun. You’ll hear his story. You never know when and where someone who want’s to harm you, will strike. Often times we are in a compromised position or perhaps your attacker is even so close, that they are at arm’s length or even closer! Violent encounters don’t happen like a competition match. There’s no timer, no scoring system and no re-shoot. Not to make fun of competition at all, because as you know, I totally enjoy it and support the shooting sports. But the main topic of this show is what to think about when shooting at arm’s length distance. So I reviewed and excellent article by Jon Payne of Suarez International on this subject. Some of this is from my personal experience during the training I recently took under him. Also, Jon Hodoway has more to say on how to pick a firearms trainer and ammunition ballistics. You’ll also learn about the Wall Drill. A dry fire practice technique taught by an Army Reserve shooting instructor. I also cover some listener emails on subjects like the Glock 26 as a back up gun and appendix carry. Finally, you’ll hear my review of the Smith and Wesson model 39-2. A little over a week ago I competed at the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls, TX. Although I didn’t do as well as I wanted, I’m glad I took on the challenge. Competition does help you improve your ability to shoot fast and accurately. Why would that be a bad thing? So in this episode, I interviewed people at the range who were shooting with me and also recorded some of the stage descriptions given by the RO’s of the match. Also, Steve Zopfi and Rick Brenneman from the PowerFactor Show joined me for a discussion after day one as to what we liked, disliked and some success and failure stories.
