David Scaife, owner of Sturdy Belt manufacturing is my guest on this episode. I’ve often talked about your concealed carry “system.” And your belt is part of that system. Some of the finest belts are made by Sturdy Belt and I own one. This episode also begins with voice mails from listeners regarding the 2nd amendment, drawing your weapon, buying your spouse a gun, Ben Branam’s response to a caller last week regarding responsible gun use and a call from Australia! I’ve always believed in a concealed carry “system.” All of the parts work together. What I mean is your gun, holster and belt work together to complete your concealed carry system. Well, add another item to the list. The CCW COMFORT SLING. Tony Ferrante, the owner of the company joins me to discuss how his product helps to complete the system.

CR Williams is my guest on this episode. He’s recently written a book about gunfighting. We discussed some excellent topics such as the emotional orientation to a gunfight, actual techniques such as the draw stroke, use of the long gun in self defense, why having a John Wayne attitude isn’t all bad, what they’re not telling you about point shooting, fighting inside of your house, long range shooting with a handgun, dry fire practice and whether or not you can buy accuracy! In other words, is accuracy king?

This week is a mixed bag again, because I didn’t really have only one single topic, so I combined a few topics into one show. You’ll hear a rebuttal from un-named trucker regarding my review of the Glock 26 a few weeks ago. Then Al Vennemeyer from Stealth Defense Holsters joins me again for a follow up from a few weeks ago. I also discuss the oppressive Maryland gun laws and why they really don’t allow concealed carry. Generation 4 Glocks are also a topic of this show. Also many thanks to Jason at Concealment Solutions for adding an extra giveaway to my fundraiser. Links can be found on the GRRN forum. You never know when and where someone who want’s to harm you, will strike. Often times we are in a compromised position or perhaps your attacker is even so close, that they are at arm’s length or even closer! Violent encounters don’t happen like a competition match. There’s no timer, no scoring system and no re-shoot. Not to make fun of competition at all, because as you know, I totally enjoy it and support the shooting sports. But the main topic of this show is what to think about when shooting at arm’s length distance. So I reviewed and excellent article by Jon Payne of Suarez International on this subject. Some of this is from my personal experience during the training I recently took under him. Also, Jon Hodoway has more to say on how to pick a firearms trainer and ammunition ballistics. You’ll also learn about the Wall Drill. A dry fire practice technique taught by an Army Reserve shooting instructor. I also cover some listener emails on subjects like the Glock 26 as a back up gun and appendix carry. Finally, you’ll hear my review of the Smith and Wesson model 39-2. I recently had a chance to shoot one for the first time. Links for all of these can be found on the Gun Rights Radio Network forum. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

A little over a week ago I took Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas. Many listeners were there to train with me. It was intense and taught us about the defensive mindset and how to safely and efficiently use our gun to stop the situation if it ever got to that point. So I decided to record a little bit of what happened at the course. I interviewed other students and also had a chance to record our instructor discuss the significant points of the class. Short of actually being there, this recording should help you share the experience. Please try to get to one of these classes. I think it’s a wise investment if you carry a gun and plan to use it as a defensive tool. We cover after action assessments, SUL, shooting with both hands and a lot more. Thanks for listening. I will post links related to this show on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. Thanks for listening. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Episode 122 – Feeling naked without my gun.

Last week I took a trip to Montreal, Canada for the entire week on business. Therefore I was not able to carry my gun. It gave me a feeling of being naked, without it. Once concealed carry becomes a habit and part of your wardrobe and your lifestyle, have you ever noticed that if you don’t carry your gun, you get the feeling that something is missing? I did, so I decided to make that the main topic of this episode. Once carrying a gun becomes second nature, you’ll probably notice this. Also, aren’t there times when one needs to downsize their firearm, depending on their activity and mode of dress required? I think the answer is yes. So you won’t feel naked because you’re not carrying a gun. Some experts say “dress around your gun” which is fine in theory, but there are times when that’s just not possible, so I discuss that too. Remember to check out the Gun Rights Radio Network forum to find out the winner of the free ticket to Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas on May 28th and 29th and the High Noon holsters I’m giving away. Al Vennemeyer, owner of Stealth Defense Strut Holsters, Inc., joins me as my guest. We discuss his new holster design and why he feels it solves some problems that concealed carry sometimes presents. He sent me one for T&E, so I will carry it for a few weeks and let you know what I think. Also, I shot an IDPA match at Cross Timbers IDPA recently and shot quite well, but made a critical error. It didn’t cost me much but it could have. So the first segment I recap that particular stage for you. I’ve also included some responses to listeners questions and emails in segment 3. 2 fellow shooters joined me at the shooting range recently and we talked afterwards. One is from Serbia and the other is from Southern California. Both now live in the gun friendly state of Texas. You will hear their perspective of what happened at the Real World Gun match at Dallas pistol club and how it has helped them improve their shooting skills and self defense gun handling techniques. I also cover some more listener feedback. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for a new shooter to get started I think you will enjoy this show. They shot their carry guns and give listeners a unique perspective on what that’s like too. Now it’s time for some fun, humor and the 12 Guns of Christmas. I do have some serious things to say also, but because it’s Christmas and the end of the year, I figured it was time for some light hearted gun stuff. Please remember to check out the links to all of the audio clips you hear on this show. Please remember to carry during the Holidays. It seems like the bad guys are out in full force during this time of the year. Don’t be a statistic and utilize your rights under the 2nd Amendment. You will also hear a recording from someone who does a great job of explaining why we should conceal carry our gun. Most of all have fun, stay out of trouble and let’s talk Christmas Guns!

Please join the Gun Rights Radio Network and participate in the forum there, you’ll find me too. There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”

Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!

Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.
