A little over a week ago I competed at the Double Tap Championship (USPSA) in Wichita Falls, TX. Although I didn’t do as well as I wanted, I’m glad I took on the challenge. Competition does help you improve your ability to shoot fast and accurately. Why would that be a bad thing? So in this episode, I interviewed people at the range who were shooting with me and also recorded some of the stage descriptions given by the RO’s of the match. Also, Steve Zopfi and Rick Brenneman from the PowerFactor Show joined me for a discussion after day one as to what we liked, disliked and some success and failure stories. This episode is as close to being as I can bring you in an audio podcast. I think you’ll enjoy it. Thanks for downloading and listening. Links are posted on the GRRN forum. Your draw from the holster is one of the most important skills to know to deploy your handgun for self defense. So is performing a reload. In this episode I get taught a new way of performing a reload. We also break down the 5 step reload into on of the best explanations I’ve ever heard in the audio version. I cover a little listener feedback in segment one. But have you ever stopped to concentrate on your draw stroke? Do yo practice it? Thousands of repetitions? When you reload do you look your magazine into the magwell or keep focused on the threat? What do you do with your gun to regain sight picture after a reload. The porpoise technique? Does your draw look like a bowling ball motion? Tune in, I think you’ll find this show educational no matter what your skill level. This show pertains to you while shooting competition OR self defense.

Good feedback and comments sent to me lately, so I start with some of my own comments and thank you’s. For the main segment, part 2 of my interview with Steve Zopfi. Some of this is a repeat of Episode 93 but not all of it, I left some of it out of the last show, now it’s included in this show. Steve and I do our best not to make this just a competitive shooting episode. We tie it into self defense techniques also.

Highlights:

  • Review of grip and natural point of aim
  • Alignment
  • Performing reloads
  • Posture
  • Grip pressure
  • Shooter’s elbow
  • The importance of training (excellent video sent by a listener)
  • Situational awareness

Check out this video sent to me by a listener, it’s excellent. Also remember to join me at the GRRN forum.

Listener feedback and comments are the topics this week. I’ve received a lot of emails and first let me say thank you! In this show I talk about a mixed bag of gun talk again, why I have 3 CCW licenses, Springfield XDM’s, Revolvers and some corrections to my revolver episode, open carry in Wisconsin, ammo recoil, self training with a handgun, gun free zones, IDPA and more. I’ll even discuss a listener’s email as to why he carries, it’s a good story, you’ll want to hear it. They are all in response to you, the loyal listener. Please remember to join me at the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. I also cover some constructive criticism and compliments. I appreciate the feedback because it helps me improve the show. You can also find me on YouTube and on Facebook and Twitter.

Analyzing practical shooting down to every detail is what Steven Zopfi and I attempt to do here. He’s been a longtime shooter (18 years) and is an IPSC Master Class shooter. He also has listened to this show for quite some time and has some real good insights on how to shoot effectively. You will really enjoy this interview and especially if you are involved in the shooting sports like IDPA, USPSA.

Highlights:

  • Seeing what you need to see.
  • Shooting with both eyes open?
  • The one year Glock 19 experiment.
  • Transitioning from Glocks to 1911’s and back and forth.
  • Trigger control
  • Transitioning.
  • Brian Enos’ Forum.
  • A story about when Steve shot against Rob Leatham.
  • Tangfolio’s new production division pistol.
  • Trigger jobs.
  • The subconscious level of practical shooting.
  • How competition shooting applies to self defense.
  • Dry fire practicing.
  • Working a flashlight while shooting.
  • Syringe method.

Tune in again later this week, I will recap my experience at Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighing Class. Remember the Freedom Raffle, time is running out! Join the Gun Rights Radio Forum and check out my newest YouTube Video.

Episode 35- Tactical reloads, game or reality? Ammo selection for your handgun.

Tactical reloads and ammo selection.  A listener recently sent me an email alerting me to the fact that many experts point out that tactical reloads can take too much time, require too many fine motor skills and could actually get you killed.  After reading the articles sent to me by Michael Bane and Ralph Mroz, PoliceOne Columnist I agree.  So I’ve put together this podcast as a continuation of Episode 32.  I also throw in some of my thoughts about selecting ammunition.

Highlights:

  • Game vs. reality debate.
  • Is the tactical reload a game technique or could it be used in a real gunfight?
  • Why I like the “speed reloads” instead.
  • What is reload with retention?
  • Are civilian gunfights decided by round count?
  • Can the tactical reload cause more malfunctions?
  • IDPA, game or reality?
  • Ammo selection, bullet design, ballistics.
  • FMJ ammo and over-penetration, is it overstated?
