Shooting techniques seldom practiced.  I realize it was only yesterday when I posted the last show, but this was fresh on my mind today and I wanted to communicate it.  I read an excellent post the other day and thought I would put my own touch on it.   In this show I talk about shooting skills I rarely see practiced at a range.  Self defense is not just standing there and plinking away at your targets at the range from 7 yards away.  It’s about shooting in unconventional positions and in various weather and lighting conditions.  Tune in.

Highlights:

  • Low light shooting.
  • Shots from strange positions.
  • Close range shooting.
  • Practicing your draw.
  • Strong hand shooting.
  • Weak hand shooting.

I’ll add to this that practicing one handed failure drills and reloading drills are a good thing too. If you haven’t done a lot of strong/weak hand shooting and you experience a failure to feed (from a weak grip)….you need to know how to clear it (safely) using only one hand. Same goes for reloading. There are safe ways and unsafe ways of doing both…and this is where going to a good shooting school comes into play…or getting someone who’s been to one to show you how.

Thanks for getting this message out, Bob. Short and to the point! I’m fortunate to have found a gun club that was founded on the principle that gun owners need to practice the items you discussed in order to be effective gun owners. The square range has its place. I was blessed to have one in my town that was inexpensive and easily accessible. It was a great place to practice the basics and to introduce my family to shooting. However, I could tell that I needed more and would not fall into a false sense of security because I could put nice, tight groups together on paper! For those who may not have a place to practice with their firearm, using airsoft in the backyard or garage may be beneficial. Stay safe. Ron

You’re right! I forgot about airsoft guns in the back yard. I wish I would have remembered to mention that on the podcast.
